Harts man charged with murder
Corbett Shawn Plumley, 31, of Salt Rock, has been arrested in charged with the murder of James Topping of Harts.
A Salt Rock man has been arrested and charged in the slaying of an elderly Harts resident.

Corbett Shawn Plumley, 31, has been charged with the murder of 84-year-old James K. Topping of Harts after Topping allegedly walked into his home and caught burglars stealing drugs.

On February 20, 2009, West Virginia State Police Senior Trooper N. W. Samples of the Hamlin detachment responded to the scene of a burglary/home invasion on Little Harts Creek Road, in Harts.

The victim, James Topping, reportedly told police that a masked individual invaded his home and attacked him.

A press release from the WVSP, said that, according to the victim, the individual stole a bottle of prescription medication and an undisclosed amount of money.

The report said the victim received injuries which required him to be transported to Logan (Regional Medical Center) for treatment. As the victim’s condition deteriorated, he was flown by HealthNet helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Five days later, Topping died while in the hospital. Later that day, WVSP Senior Trooper N.W. Samples and Senior Trooper G.H. Ellis III of the Hamlin detachment, arrested Plumley and charged him with Toppings’ murder.

The police report said Topping’s death was the result of injuries received during the altercation on February 20 during the allegedly home invasion.

how could this 31 year old man do what he done to this poor 84 year old man.?Mr Toppings ws a very sweet man.

Because he's an ignorant person whom has no care in the world for anyone else, but himself. The world today is so bad. I cannot believe someone would take someone's life over a pill. It's because of people like this that those who have so much pain cannot get any help to ease it. Mr. Topping was a good man, who didn't bother anyone. He will be dearly missed, and hopefully, his killer will serve a justifiable punishment for it.

i cant believe he was acting alone while his sister sat in the basement and had no idea what he was doing or even that she didnt get her share when it was over and he probabily told her what he had done. This hurt alot of people, not just his immediately family but also his distant family and his bros and sis in the church. He took a good man away from us all and I hope and pray that they find out who else was in on it and they get what they deserve.

His parents are Joann Frye-Plumley-Sampson-Carper ..lol...she's from St. Albans. His dad is Michael Plumley from 9 mile.

I had heard that if they don't do something by December then he walks free. I hope and pray that isn't the case. He doesn't deserve any type of freedom. I still can't get over what he has done. I know Shawn, and have for many many years. Haven't had any contact with him for over 8 years now. He changed alot after he got involved with that girl in Boone County. Never would have expected anything like this out of him before. I feel so bad for Mr Topping's family. They are all in my thoughts and prayers!! May God Bless You All!!

wow i think hes a little to late just because he got involed with some chick in boone county,who cares.!!that chick is just as sick as he is to fool with such a low life.Shawn took a human life and if he walks free just because hes been a good little boy because hes with a chick then someone needs to beat the crap out of him everytime he showed his ugly face.Mr Toppings was a very sweet man and his family deserves better then have trash like him in their face.

She is just as sick as he is. He has been arrested atleast 15 times. I don't see how he ever walked. I didn't know Mr Toppins, but I have heard really wonderful things about him. I am sad for his family to have lost some one like him. My heart goes out to them.

i agree with you 100 percent.Mr Topping was the kind of man that would have given u anything you ask him for.if it was cold outside he had a jacket on and he knew u were cold he would take his jacket off just to keep you warm. now what other things did this sicko do at being arrested at least 15 times.why the hell was he ever waking free to start with?

I can't figure out that if you kill a dog or some other kind of animal it is called abuse. or if you cut down a tree, it is shameful. Or if you move a mountian to get the minerals and so forth out and create a job it is SO bad. BUT IF YOU KILL A HUMAN BEING , YOU CAN WALK AS A FREE MAN. I know for a fact that he has been arrested for assult, breaking and entering (different than this case), not sure what else he's been arrested for. They would let him out and just give him probation. One would think that with a record like he has, they would lock him up for good, but it had to come down to something like this, and still may not get anything out of it. There are 2 men in Griffithsville that are on home confinement,they commited murder, why didn't they give them prison time? The system is all screwed up. I am sure you all can agree with me on that one. I would honestly like to see his ass fry! He is one sick individual!!!

It does not matter who his parents are... he is the one chose to do the crime.

I don't think that Paula and Sandy's brother Scott was ever married to Stephanie(shelly).Stephanie is married to a Doss man from Nine Mile.From what I heard he is going to Michigan and hauling drugs back to sell.If that is true I hope that him and her both get caught.As for the girl that Shawn was with from Boon County,didn't she get into alot of trouble for rape on a little boy??

I say it until i'm blue in the face. The problem of stealing starts with a drug dealer. Alot of domestic Violence problems start with a drug dealer. Addiction that ruins peoples life starts with a drug dealer. Alot of murders start with a drug dealer. Now, don't get me wrong i'm sure someone that smokes pot will get on here and talk, but i'm talking about the serious drugs like coke and meth. And in lincoln co. PILLS. Its getting about time that residents of this county find a judge and/or magistrate that will give us the promise of throwing the book at people who sale drugs. Theres hardly a reason for the police to even arrest drug dealers right now. The way i see, drug dealers "due to violence, and theft, and what have you" use ALOT of tax dollars anyways. I'll tell you this, If we ever have a magistrate or judge that will run with the sole purpose of throwing the book at drug dealers, they will get my vote. And once they're in office, if they want to play politics, then in 4 years i'm voting for the next person that will tell me they will throw the book at drug dealers. I'm sick of it. Now Stephanie (Shelly) is livin' with a rapiest.Her and Patrick is gettin a divorce.This is not just hear say either.I looked this mans name up on the internet and he is a registed sex affender.It is a shame that she would put her child into a home with a pieace of sh!* like that.

I dont know these people, but the law states that
sex offenders are not allowed around any children under 18. She can immediately lose custody of that baby.
