Letter: City shouldn't cut deals with Wal-Mart

Full story: Chico Enterprise-Record

Many other retailers - FoodMaxx, Winco, Costco, etc. - rightly challenge the price advantages Wal-Mart claims.

Not sure if anyone who is against a supercenter has ever been in and look hard. Winco has in most cases, had lower food prices. Foodmax in Oroville just started to lower some of their prices when Grocery Outlet opened a few hundred feet away from them. There is a super walmart in Yuba City and all the other food stores are very busy. The city putting a gun to walmarts head and demanding a million for wood stoves is just short of illegal!

Just like the big Wall Street banks in the financial sector, Walmart is a predator in its sector. That's how it got so big and powerful and arrogant.

It seems like the only people that are against the Walmart expansion at this point are the competing retailers. Why should we cater to some corporations, but not others? News flash people Costco, Foodmax, and Winco are just as greedy, selfish, and want your money just as bad as Walmart. There is absolutely no difference between these corporations except that these other guys have a few hippies brainwashed into thinking that Walmart is evil. Put the pipe down. Attempt to develop a thought on your own. Stop letting these greedy corporations brainwash you into thinking that Walmart providing us with convenience, and savings is in any way bad.

More competition = better for the consumer.

Improving the streets, sidewalks, streetlights and signal lights are all excepted as a part do doing business anywhere, asking for a million dollars for wood stoves takes this over the top of stupidy and the state AG should look into this. How many mom and pop stores when out when Foodmax, Winco, Costco, etc went in and did they care or was it business for them at any cost.

Antitrust laws prohibit a company from selling below cost in order to drive out competitors. It's called predatory capitalism and it leads to LESS competition. That's what consumers who question Walmart's motives are concerned about, among other issues.

Good people of Chico. Walmart contributes nothing to your community except minimum wage jobs and minimum quality goods, they had to change their motto from "always the lowest prices" to "always low prices" because they lied. They don't support the local newspaper, the sports teams, TV or Radio, their workers are asked to do civic "Things" but with little or no money from the store. No local products unless you consider China local. They drive out your choice, They usually claim to add sales taxes to the local city, but it turns out to be a wash. I've seen it happen several places and those towns and cities are far less happy with the end results. Costco,Safeway and many others pay better and provide some health benifits unlike Walmart which tells its people how to get "public welfare care" at your expense. Oh, the money you spend there, it ships out to Arkansas every night. Shop around and you'll do better and support your local community.

If you have any mutual funds, in a 401k or otherwise, it is almost a sure thing that you are a shareholder in Walmart. I hope you do the "descent thing" and divest your self of your Walmart ownership. This will be at the peril of your retirement, of course.

Personally I hate Walmart. BUT,.. as my husband pointed out,.. what's good for the goose is good for the gander. The city of Chico didnt want to have anything to do with the mall on 20th Street in the beginning either. They said it would take business away from the old mall etc. SOO,. the new mall built right outside of city limits. Once the city of Chico realized how much money they were missing out on,.. they expanded the limits to include the mall. They have done this MANY times,.. kind of like the ol'..'if you cant beat em,.. join em'. I really hate Walmart and everthing it stands for,.. but in reality,.. as long as they abide by the same set of rules as everyone else,.. they should be allowed to build. I really think that if Chico allows other businesses to move foward and not Walmart (solely based on the fact that it's a corporate pig) then the city might get their a$$e$ handed to them in a law suit they cant afford. I suppose the best thing those of opposing walmart is to not shop there.

I completely agree,.. Walmart offers "low prices" because they get all of their crap from China made by children for pennies. How do you think they can sell you that $5 shirt and still turn a profit? Slave labor,.. crappy products and crappy pay.

Of course, in some way or another. Why did you have to ask? Every rain drop helps fill the ocean, trees are made of leaves. Again why did you have to ask? It seems to simple.

Sounds like Target, JC Penney, Mervyn's, Sears, Toys R Us, Costco, Big Lots, downtown stores, etc. That bandwagon must be getting pretty loaded down.

You're going to have to do better than that. Walmart USED to sell American made products and that was part of their appeal. Once Mr. Walton died,.. they sold out. Just like Disney did when Walt died. I'm sure they're both turning in their graves..

i think a superwalmart would be a good thing. it would open up some jobs for people and california as a whole is a state that is more than face deep in the unemployment tank with the unemployment sharks going in for the kill. besides, WINCO SUCKS!! do not buy meat from their unless you plan on cooking it as soon as you hit the parking lot. cant really say nothing good or bad about foodmax and costcos..dont shop there. a superwalmart would be doing chico a favor. whats all the fuss about anyway?

Daily Horoscope for January 2

Capricorn

Self deception will be the main issue today. You may be judging your situation wrongly: don't hold back, say what you think diplomatically and without being hurtful. This should result in a positive mental outlook for you. Competitive sports activity will ease any stress or tension.
