Local leaders fearful of regional housing goals

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

THERE ARE FEW statistics that cause as much fear in the hearts of Marin public officials, environmentalists and slow-growth advocates as the Association of Bay Area Governments population projections.

We can go to the east bay and see what all this growth has done. The City of Oakland spent redevelopment money on housing projects that went clunk. Like the 3 Orchids project built on 80 next to the county jail. They can't give those places away because people don't want to live next to the freeway.
ABAG has visions of grandeur with everybody living in cramped shared thin wall condo/apartment buildings down in the flats next to train tracks and freeways, but that is not what people really want, it is what ABAG wants.
Also ABAG never considers the reality that everywhere in the bay area and greater bay area we don't have any extra water to feed all this planned new development. Marin has enough for existing residents but Sonoma is now rationing, and so are other water districts in the bay area.
I think ABAG should do a bit of demographic research and take inventory of available water sources before trying to dictate to Marin what they think will happen here. Obviously their statistics are outdated and need to be updated to the new reality.

ABAG has a governing board consisting of elected local government representatives from Bay Area cities and counties. They are the ones who set these absurd mandates for high-density development in areas that are already built-out and have limited water supplies. Take a look at who they are and vote them out when they run for re-election in your community. Elect people who will tell ABAG staff to get real, people who will refuse to ratify ABAG staff's growth mandates that are outdated policy artifacts from a bygone era.

The dominant group at ABAG are pro development and are utilizing ABAG stats to pad their developer buddies pockets. 106 representatives on a body that really has no authority. Marin should get out of this quasi governmental agency and put their time and resources into sustained development. How many of your local politicians have you heard utilize that term lately. Sustainability should be the key word that should be used by all county planners and representatives. Instead we get "how can we jam 712 more units a year into our high density corridor?".

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Aquarius

Avoid making promises today, or even believing in other people's promises. Today is not a good day to make commitments, as they are not likely to materialise. Taking risks is a no-no. Try to relax until the numbers are in your favour. Those pursuing their career will benefit.
