It's a shame that while the country celebrates the Fourth of July, many Americans don't really understand what they are celebrating.

Ref: R.M. Ware's ltr, "'Auntie' off limits for some seniors." Not sure where you're from, but terms of endearment and respect permeate our society in Hawaii. Auntie, Tutu, even though they may not be kin, are used almost daily to those outside the family, and do reflect respect for a persons age. It doesn't bother me at all for someone to call me Pops. Some people just have to have something to complain about. Perhaps you should consider living the rest of your life as a hermit, out of touch with other people.

Smoky: I agree with you. But, blogging this paper over several years, 90% of the arm chair nuts will DIS-agree.
They believe the war in Iraq was absolutely necessary, a divine edict from God, and Plame was "outted" by the tooth fairy, not Cheney's group. These same believe GW Bush was the second greatest President in US history, only after Ronnie Reagan. Grab a Roman candle, sit back, and watch the "posts".

Baloney. We do not need anymore "left wing" "bleeding heart" democrat like Hannemann or Abecrombie in the governor's office who - if either Abercrombe or Hanneman were today in Lingle's shoes either man would rather burden the people of Hawaii increased taxes and fees instead of instituting furloughs or layoffs in the bloated Hawaii state bureaucracy.

In fact Hawaii needs to get rid of all democrats in the legislature and free the people from well-meaning tax mad and spend democrats.

"Our forefathers were tired of living in the shadow of British royalty and were virtually enslaved as worker bees under tyrannical leaders, who used torture not only to intimidate, but for amusement."

The Dems who dominate Hawaii today are not much better than the British of the past. It took strong daring dedicated men (and women) to throw off the yolk of oppression the British hung over the colonists necks. It is a shame that so many in Hawaii do not really know what oppression really is. Under the Dems in the past 50 years the state has been ground into the dirt by their heavy boots. Taxed to death with no representation. Businesses terrorized to the point they leave the state or shut down. But the lemmings keep voting them in for a mere pittance of a bowl of chili and rice. What would our forefathers think about this? And now the whole country is being infested with the seeds of socialism. Our once great country is dieing. The Brits are no longer killing it, it is the Dems. This is a sad July 4th.

Shouldn't health insurance be like car insurance?

You need car insurance for when expensive accidents happen...

Not for every time you buy new tires, fill the gas tank, or have the oil changed.

Totally agree with you, Kirkland. Goof and 'Cromby would just raise taxes and cave to special interests.

I'm just saying Aiona is a lite weight. He doesn't have the strength and resolve that Lingle has in dealing with the current economic situation.

His agenda is limited to an extreme religious right wing agenda only.

The terms "auntie" and "uncle" or "tutu" are terms of respect for someone older, it isn't term of familiarity here as perhaps it would be elsewhere. In Hawaii being called "auntie" is synonymous with "ma'am."

Oh, btw, if you really spend a lot of time worrying about stuff like this you may benefit from more prunes in your diet.

The trouble with car insurance is that you also pay for the people on welfare and the people who cannot afford enough coverage.
You also pay for the ilegal aliens who run into the emergency room with no health care. How do you fix that?

Dear letterwriter Ware:

As one who learned Hawaiian (and other local) culture from older Native Hawaiians many, many years ago, I find myself occasionally using "uncle" or "auntie" or "pops" or "tutu" for older people, including some I don't know. They are terms of endearment. I often use "sis" for women who are my age or younger, and the response has always been positive.

There is nothing negative about those familial terms.

Maybe it is because you say "Hey Auntie" instead of "Aloha Auntie?"

If you find it offensive when Hawaiians call you by such an endearing term, you might politely tell them that in your culture it is rude. They will understand. Trust me, however, it is not "rude" to Hawaiians or most local people of other cultures who have grown up in the Island culture(s).

I must admit that I have never met anyone who was offended by being addressed by such an endearing term, until I read your letter.

At this point in time, it is mere speculation to say what the Iona's agenda is nor his ability to deal with the current economic situation. As Lieutenant Governor, Iona to Lingle, Iona is by experience not a light weight. I find it difficult to understand how people can judge a candidate even before his personality and his "agenda" is exposed in a debate.

The people of Hawaii has long been susceptible to propaganda. The proof lies there in the Hawaii legislature enacting a law such as taxing internet sales, a general excise tax that affects the poor, the elderly and the middleclass - GET on food, medicine and medical services. The proof lies there in the Oahu city hall.

If YOU are not comfortable being addressed, as auntie, then kindly let the person know. However to suggest to others they should not address people in such a manner is NOT for you to dictate. Perhaps its best if you wear ear plugs, lock yourself in your house and don't associate with people, because refering to any older person using a respectful term of auntie, uncle, pops, or ma even if one is not familiar with the person is not going to stop just because YOU think it should.

Daily Horoscope for November 26

Sagittarius

The mood is considerably lighter as the Moon enters Aries and your fifth house of romance and creativity today; plan to enjoy a good time tonight. Make a play date with your inner child and forget about all your responsibilities for a few hours; you've been working hard and deserve time off for good behaviour. Just remember, no drinking and driving... hire a cab if you plan to go out for the evening.
