Breezeinthru wrote: This all goes back to child responsibilities and pet owner responsibilities. People that have children should be intelligent enough to take care of them and not let them just wander off, being outside alone, some parents say "well I kept looking out the window and they were right there". Oh my gosh!!! HOw long does it take for a small child to get into something and when will parents learn that along with the child comes responsibilities. I still think people should have to take tests before having children...... Then there are all the pet owners that get these dogs, pits in particular, that make them look cool to have a pit bull guarding their homes or properties. BUT along with pets, just as babies, there comes responsibilities, and there are just some ignorant pet owners out there that are NOT responsible and NEVER socialize their dogs. Just like the ignorant parents that never watch their children. I think the blame can go both ways here, but I do agree, they dog could have been put in a foster home to see if it could have been properly socialized to know how to mix with humans, Pit bulls DO NOT have to be agressive dogs. Ignorant people and irresponsible pet owners make them that way. No, pit bulls don't have to be aggressive, but they have been bred to be aggressive killers. Just as other breeds have been breed to have certain temperaments and certain physical characteristics, pit bulls have been BRED to be aggressive and deadly. They have been bred to have the most powerful jaws of any breed, care to guess why? So that they can kill! If a pit bull is not aggressive, it doesn't mean that he will never be, it just means that he hasn't experienced the right trigger..........like a small child that might appear to be prey. No one can be certain that any dog won't become aggressive, but the odds of a pit bull attacking are higher than any breed, and when they do, they inflict much more damage, because of their powerful bite. If my yorkie attacks you, he can't kill you, but if a pit bull attacks, he can kill you as others try to stop him. Too dangerous for socialization. I can't believe that there are so many cruel ignorant people who think this breed is worth all the death and bloodshed. Shame on all of you!

I also believe that all pitbulls should be banned because you never know when they are going to attack someone Sorry about your niece. Pits are not the only dogs that attack or even kill.I am a pit owner and unlike all pitbull owners, my pit is part of the family. He is a member of our household, not just a dog on a chain. My dog has never see a chain, nor will he ever. He has been a house pet since he was born and has never given a problem of any sort.I don't agree that all pitbull breeds should be banded. the owners should be made to report to cityhall that they are owners of this breed and measures need to be taken to see that these dogs are not abused and are well taken care of, not chained. Taking better care of these pets I assure you will have a better outcome.

Stop chaining your dogs wrote: First, I am not blaming the child. But I am not going to blame the dog either. How can a 2 year old wander away from a house! Second, when is this country going to learn that a chained, ostracized dog is not a socialized dog and is very protective of their small space! When a chained dog feels threatened they cannot run, they fight. I hope this dog is not put to sleep. I hope he is placed in a loving home where he can be part of the family. And I hope the owners of this dog are charged. Perhaps instead of banning certain breeds, this community should ban certain owners. And especially ban chaining! look you must have all your values turned around. yes, i agree that it is not right to chain a dog. however as a mother i know a two year old child can and will wander. i do not think that this dog thought this little baby was going to cause it harm. the dog should be put down, some dogs like some people are just down right evil. i strongly think pit bulls should be banned. this little angel should have never had to die such a horrid death by a monster beast. God have men domainion other beast. hey, i have a large loving Lab that is an in side dog. i have grandchildren. so let me put it this way.........as much as i love my dog if he were to bite one of my babies i myself would shoot him. point blank, i value a human life more than that of a beast.

What in the heck is wrong with you people? I have two small kids and yes they do wander, but never far from my side. The ones at fault here should be the babysitter for not keeping a watchful eye on the baby and the pitt owners....the pitt should be put down, but only becase he attacked. I agree he was probably protecting his territory, but he did attack and kill an innocent child that didnt know any better. Keeping a dog on a chain is cruel. A dog needs freedom! They have emotions and issues just like you and me...would you want to be chained up all day? BUT to take away your freedom to even own one is not right either. What about all the other innocent sweet loving pitts in that town. Grant it they may be high ranked in the vicious sense, but they were raised that way. Animals are part of families like a child. How would you like to give away one of your children because someone elses child killed another? Not right! What about all the other types of dogs that can and will attack? If you have to keep a dog chained up then you should find it a better home!!! I pray for this family and all they hav been through!

I HOPE SO!!!!!!!!!! yes, the ban has been passed, the pit owners "inside the city limits of Prescott" will have 60 days to comply......To clear up some of the "misgivings" of the story.... it was a neighborhood street, not one that is considered "busy" and certainly not a "main traffic" type street but the street is not relevant actually because the house was not far from the sitters house, so it was not necessarily the street my grandson got into to even get to the house....crossing yards was possible to access from one house to the other...the house this pit was at, the dog was not a family pet, it was a vicious animal chained for that purpose..as the house he was chained at was known in that area as "the bootleggers house" so please use your imagination as to what this dogs reason for being here was....and there was also two other pits running loose, the female and the "young adult" (not classed as a puppy) the male and female was taken into custody, but the young one is still to my knowledge running loose in the area,(the officers have tried to catch it with no success) the owner of the pit has (I have heard) signed the order to have the male put down...I have no idea about the female as to date...

I live in Prescott, so I know the area and am aware that it's not a "busy" street. I have seen all the pits, out in the weather, looking starved and dangerous, chained to a stake or a doghouse. These animals have NO place in our society. They should not be allowed in towns at all and should only be allowed in rural areas if they are in completely enclosed pens and are registered and the owner pays a hefty fee to register him. The owner should be required to have a large liability insurance policy. We'll see how much these owners really value their "pet." It's a sad reflection on these owners that they blame the child or his sitter or mother, when clearly this animal was the direct cause of this child's death. These people are not far removed from animals themselves, if they value a dog over a human life3.

I disagree with this partially, If a Pit is raised and bred correctly they are great animals and valued family members... as I said in another post... When a teen or kid kills another kid, time to start banning the kids from town too.... no DOUBLE STANDARDS

What kind of person are you? Where in the world are you from? You speak of "double standards" with a comparison to a wild beast with no brain to that of children. How sick mined you must be. God help your children if he has blessed you with any. I still am appalled by what I have read, in fact I had to throw up because people like you make me sick. Do you truly believe that a beast has more worth than a human? A baby, just a little baby harming no one or nothing is ripped apart by this wild beast, and you are defending the beast? I truly believe it is people like you who provoke young teens into becoming violent. Where i am from if a pitt bull came into my yard near my children or my Lab I would walk no run into my house and get my gun. Needless to say that pit bull would not have a chance to get close to my loved ones because by hell I would take the beast out with one shot and then bill the owner 25 cents for the bullet.

Dogs do have a brain and most are very smart including Pitbulls. This was not meant to be against the child, it is sad that the child died, and the owners of the Pitbull should be held liable, PERIOD. A Pitbull isnt a Savage Beast, most of them anyways just like other dogs. But when people talk about banning a whole breed for a few bad apples, thats wrong, i compared it to teens killing other teens, because that happens more then people being killed by a Pit.... Why not ban the kids for the few bad apples, its a comparison .... thats it. I have owned a pit and she was the friendliest companion i have ever had for 9 yrs, great around kids and anyone else.

To all out there claiming God has everything to do with todays society.... Shame on you. I dont criticize you for your beliefs and you should not Judge me for mine... As you are religious u know "only GOD can judge" so you are forsaking your God. I am Athiest and we are all allowed to have our beliefs as we want them. As for Banning all Pitbulls, Try doing some research sometime online at the Good many Pitbulls do in this world and our society. I am not defending this animal, but the owners should be charged with the same charge as the Dog. The Dog kills then convict the owners of Murder or at least manslaughter. Also Taking God out of schools is a good thing.. As there are many religions that have their own God and to support one and not the other is wrong. Give the schools a moment of silence and leave it at that..... As for Spankings I do agree, when the country got soooo pussywhipped that they decided spanking was child abuse and not discipline is one thing that has wronged our youths. But if you pay attn, many people still spank their kids. But I know how easy it is to PLAY THE BLAME GAME... easier to blame someone else instead of taking responsibility for your actions. Go ahead and live in your diluted bible thumping world after all this is a Free Country.

Maybe you should look how many adolescents murdered people last year compared to Dog attacks resulting in Deaths... I think you might wake up and smell the F'n Coffee
