-At Monday night's meeting of the Prentiss County School Board, a motion to rescind the district's '2-4' plan died for lack of a second.
Trustee Ronny Kesler made the motion. He represents Wheeler School,
which would be one of two schools to lose its high school, beginning with this 2010-2011 school year.
The other would be Jumpertown.
Under that plan, high schools would be at Thrasher and New Site and K-6 schools would be at Hills Chapel, Marietta, Jumpertown and Wheeler.
However, the board did vote to have a work session and discuss the issue further, with more facts and figures regarding alleged savings.
This plan is supposed to save the district $1 million and affect the least 766 students.Superintendent Matt Smith told those at the meeting, the decision that had to be made is financial due to a potential total of $991,000 in cuts to this school district. Some $400,000 has already been cut from the current budget.
If that were the case, Smith said the state would ask for the district's plan to get out of the red and that a 'conservator' could come in and run the school district.
He emphasized the issue is financial, not an 'academic deficit';
With fund balance reserves, he said the district has about $1.4 million, which would last one to one-and-one-half-years based on current spending.
During the meeting, two residents. Cheryl McCoy and Cindy White, spoke opposing the district's plan to restructure, beginning in 2010.
