PETA wants to stop transfer of animal to animal center in town

Full story: Stamford Advocate

An animal rights group is urging a bankrupt Florida zoo to avoid giving its 3-year-old orangutan to a private Greenwich animal center that's agreed to take the endangered primate as collateral on a $100,000 loan made to the zoo last year.

Lisa Wathne, a captive exotic animal specialist for PETA, said that transferring the animal as loan collateral, as well as separating the ape from its mother prematurely, would be unethical.

This coming from people that think that drinking milk and eating shrimp is unethical means zero to me.

PETA should just shup up and just disapear.

Another Lionshare story lacking candor.

If the animal was used to secure the loan - and that's apparently what documents say - then the denials of intent are 100% disingenuous.

The denial could be made real by a forgiveness of the loan and release of the colateral.

Anything less than that tells you the true story.
The more we hear about Lionshare the more questions are raised and go ananswered.

As far as PETA itself is concerned I ususlly disagree with its extreme positions. However, in this case, it seems PETA has raised a good point.

This is not about PETA, so chill on the hating. It's about separating a baby orangutan from her mother-- which cannot and should not be allowed to happen. It would be cruel beyond comprehension. Surely Ms Leone knows this and will do the right thing. The AZA is willing to move mother Sara and baby Indah together to a safe zoo for free. This is what needs to happen!

Check out the Orangutan Outreach website [www.redapes.org] to learn more about the crisis facing orangutans in the wild. There's no reason to make life terrible for them over her, too...

I doubt that my post constitutes PETA "hating."

Nonetheless, it seems that if Lionshare were as sensitive as you wish, it would never have named the juvenile as collateral. And, if the intent is/was not to cash-in, Lionshare should legally relinquish its unexercised claim.

She says the 3 year old Orangutan is not worth $100,00? Well, if a baby Orang costs $50,000 on the black market, then what is a 3 year old worth? Let's assume that the 3 year old in robust health, then is it worth $75,000; $85,000 or more? Not much less than $100,000, especially when there is an inherent risk with buying the $50,000 baby. There is no guarantee that the baby would live to even 3 years. Okay, maybe she's telling the truth when she said the Orang was not worth $100,000 but if I were the reporter, I would have asked her what it IS worth. Because once again, the reader has to fill in the blanks. Her statement could be interpreted that the 3 year old is worth any dollar amount below $100,000, including an amount as low as $5,000.

Oh please, give me a break. It's an animal, get over it.

People should worry more about human babies than animals.

No offense.

I have no axe to grind with PETA.

Lionshare is a different matter. The more I hear about it the more I wonder. Collateralizing a loan with this animal makes recent statements incredible.

Lionshare is troubling in its opacity, absence of disclosure, and lack of forthright candor. In this case, I feel PETA is onto something even larger than the legitimate issue it has raised.

If you don't appreciate or respect animals, WTF are
you doing on this thread? I'm so sick of people responding in this manner. It's not people vs. animals,
it's just about doing the right thing.

Lord have mercy, why is it when we want to defend the animals (who incidentally have no one to speak for them) humans have to come into the picture?

Humans HAVE enough groups/institutions to defend them
