I was told there are no fireworks scheduled this year in Brookville for the fourth of July?
I was also wondering why an outside company was brought in to do the fireworks at Canoefest when the Noah brothers have done a fine job for many years providing fireworks to our community. I thought Canoefest and the Friday Night on Main were to promote our community and keep money local? |

The fireworks were done by local guys. Premier Fireworks is the name of the company they work for...

If it is true and there are no fireworks at the dam this year there are really really good fireworks at the park in College Corner.
|
||||
|
I think the Noah brothers were financially taking a hit on the fireworks and deciede after many great years to let someone else work and foot the bill.

It is sad there is not going to be fireworks on the dam again this year. Last year it just wasn't the same seeing them at the town park. My family was really looking forward to the same old tradition we have shared for many years of spending time at the lake then watching the fireworks in the evening. Will have to look for a new location to go to.

Noah Bros will be at the Metamora Firemans Festival on the 4th of July. Please come down for great fireworks and great fried chicken.
Thanks |

This is correct. They put out jars to collect funds for the fireworks, but the community didn't support it enough for them to continue the tradition. |

I think it's better having them in the park. SOme of the best stuff wasn't even visible if you weren't on a boat in the lake. So we were asked to pay for the fireworks while the Buckeye floatilla got the best benefit. The Noahs are GREAT guys and I appreciate their dedication to doing this for the community so many years. I am sorry they had to give it up but why should they foot the bill all the time?
But as far as the park fireworks, they should do the fireworks at dark so young families with little kids don't have to be out so late and then have the concert afterward for the partiers. |

Years past we would make the long trip down to Brookville lake to view the fireworks from our boat. We usally ate lunch and supper at Brookville, did some shopping in Liberty and Brookville and then on the lake by 6 pm for the fireworks.
I guess we will just stay in Ohio this year. So many great fireworks displays in Ohio why go out of state to spend money. |

Well, buckeye--did you specifically support the fireworks financially or just float around watching them? Appreciate that you spent money on meals-but the reason no fireworks is no money to do them again this year. They actually made that announcement last year during the bicentennial celebration (that it would be the last).

In reality, your measely dollars you spent on food and shopping doesn't account for much. Because the Brookville Lake is run by the Corp of Engineers, it is considered government property. Therefore, the property dooes not generate any property taxes. In addition, even though you probably put your boat in for free, any fees collected by the Indiana Department of NAtural Resources are kept by the state and not shared with the local county or town governments. These same local governments are responsible for supplying support services like police and road repairs as necessary. The county does not have a sales tax. The county does have an income tax that residents and businesses alike pay. The employment opportunities at the lake have greatly diminshed over the years. For example, there are no more life guards on the beaches and the concession stands have been closed down so no employees are needed to staff them- costing the count income tax revenues.Therefore,your measely $ generate miniscule $ for the local governments in the form of county income tax paid on business net income. So, the burden of providing services to visitors is placed on the shoulders of the local citizenry. So, in conclusion, if you stay home, you save us money. |

You might wanna check on your tax figures a bit. True there is NO property taxes from the lake area that is under government control, but lets take in light the property taxes on the new homes built around the lake or because of the lake vs the older homes that existed prior to pre lake years. No comparison on the tax liabilities. According to a past (30 yr ago) council member that sat on the board, the first 7 yrs it was a loss (property tax wise) for the county, the following 3 yrs the county then broke even and every year afterwards it's been a steady increase.(ck the county auditor's website of 50+ yr old homes vs 15 yr old homes, it's not even close in tax payments) not saying some of those homes would have been built anyway, but like it or not, many of the NEW homes built here were because people wanted to be close or closer to the lake and love this area. Would numerous other business' exist if not for the lake? Sunoco, BP, 52 Pik up, Barton's Bay, Parkside Marine? Kent's Harbor Marina (Franklin Co) or the Sagamore (Union Co), and the residents in this county that work at those places, or OWN them? The lake indeed stresses our services to the max and beyond, but fact of life it's here to stay, we can't change that, but what I DON'T understand is the constant ill feelings towards those that use it and DO spend money here, aren't we cutting our own business owners throats? People here put down "Buckeye's" yet how many of us shop in Harrison, Cincinnati, Hamilton? Ok for us but not for them? |

No, the implication in the post (by the way, that poster called himself buckeye, which is why I used that term) was that we should somehow have been grateful for his presence and he would pout and take his floatilla elsewhere. I say fine. He also implied that's the only reason they came here--for fireworks. Would his floatilla not float as well on a nice sunny day spent on the lake? I simply get tired of the idea that we should somehow be so grateful for these people--most are friendly. Others cause all sorts of problems in this community. So I don't see why I should care if mr. buckeye floatilla can no longer find a reason to bless us with his presence.
|

Agree and my post was not in reference to yours or the "buckeye floatilla". I agree 100% that coming here one time a year to watch fireworks that they may or may not support is not my concern and if you want to see the fireworks put money in the can's like I and I'm sure many others on here have done in the past. But they're all welcome in my eye's (in state or out), I was simply responding to that age old argument of "lost property tax" revenue, sorry but facts and figures just don't support that argument anymore. |

I agree that the lake has drawn some new development, I also believe there are several other factors that have drawn development to FC. First, as Dearborn County began building out, the cost of property in Dearborn County accelerated. Therfore, FC became a cheaper alternative to Dearborn COunty. Second, the people who were tired of living in the city and don't mind the commute moved into Franklin COunty. Some because of the cost of property in DC and some because they liked FC better. Many of these people didn't move here because of the lake but rather the cheaper property and the ambience. In other words, the lake is nice but not a necessity. I don't think the people who moved into say the New Trenton or Mt. Carmel areas did so because of the lake. In my estimation, I believe that people move here less for the lake and more for other reasons. The reason? There is very little lake front property. People that are attracted to the water want to live on the water, not just near the water. If all you are attracted to is the lake, then none of the other amenities of the community mena much. So, if I have to haul my boat anyway why not just do it from Harrison, Hamilton or Cincy? Relative to cutting the throats of businesses in the area, my comments were written from the perspective of the tax base and the cost benefit of the local govt. providing services to this big recreation area but not receiving any funding from it. If the government property is an attraction, I believe that it is wrong for the state to keep all of the money generated by the fees. A simple extrapolation tells you that the more successful the attraction, the more people that come and the more fees that the state collects. They could raise the fees with very littel repercussion and pass these onto the local government so that the services would not have to be provided on the backs of the local citizenry. |

it's a shame if this rings true about the fireworks i wish there was something we as a community could do to save this any ideas?

I hate to take on the argument about the taxes, Might check, but I think you are mistaken. You are ASSUMING that more houses built=increase tax revenue. However, this is NOT the case. Residential occupation is the COSTLIEST type of development in terms of public services rendered. While there are certainly other benefits to having additional residents, your implication that the increase in houses built is a boost to the public coffers is untrue. Only economic development provides a true positive - more tax dollars generated than used up in additional public services provided.
|
||||
|
And by the way, I think it's hysterical the attitude some of our new country neighbors have:
1) They've never lived outside a city suburb before, and they expect the same amenities in terms of utilities, public services, etc. that they are accustomed to; and 2) They scream and holler about preserving the rural nature of the county, but THEY moved in and built here. It's like they all want to be the LAST one allowed in, and then shut the door and turn away the next poor shlep who wants to move out here to escape city life. |

I know this is way off topic of the fireworks...but when you are talking about providing services to visitors, visitors staying at home, saving "us" money, etc. Has anyone paid any attention to the accident and injury reports from Haspin Acres from just one weekend? Now, that keeps Franklin County tied up constantly..some weekends it is one emergency call after another up to Haspin Acres, many times resulting in calls for Aircare..THAT SHOULD GIVE THE CITIZENS OF FRANKLIN COUNTY A RIGHT TO COMPLAIN! |
|||
|
yeah I agree how does Haspin get away with it?
