I know all the justifiers and soothers will be in sooner or later but there is absolutely no excuse for hitting a horse. I have 100 times the deer and animals around me and Ive never hit anything that could not have somehow been avoided. The crap of people saying its OK or they just jump out in front of you is why this happens. Same with another car or a kid. Hitting something is unacceptable no matter whos fault the law says it is.

One might think you are a bleeding heart liberal with your PETA like statement, but they would be mistaken. You obviously do not even have a heart. Show some compassion jerk. A 15 year old girl lost her life.

I have 3 horses of my own. Horses are very unpredictable at times, and the child nor the driver should be blamed. Accidents do happen and the main thing to remember is that the child lost her life, the horse, and the poor driver has to live with this rest of his life. It was an accident and nothing more. Remember this could happen to anyone. God Bless the child's family and also the man that hit them.

You are an idiot and I hope that you never have to deal with what this man has to. Are you God?? Do you have the right to judge this man?

Nope, just a poor excuse for a human being.
Do you not have a heart? This was an accident and nothing more. I bet that guy woke up this morning and said to himself "I think I will aim to hit a girl riding her horse and kill them both"!! Get a life and have a heart!

How dare you poke fun at the death of a child! Then how dare you climb up on your high horse to say how it's wrong to hit anything as you have never hit anything. Let me guess you are perfect? You've never, ever hit a curb, or a piece of debris in the road? When something jumps in front of you there is a choice you have to make in a split second, if you have the time...hit it or kill others in the oncoming lanes or ram yourself into a pole, or other structure on the side of the road. Get off of your soapbox! I hope, for your sake, that you never have to eat your words.

Using a livestock animal as a vehicle. Animal behaviour is unpredictable. The horse got scared and appeared to dart into the road. Quite risky. Better to keep horses on the farm or on the trail and off the roads.

Safety first. Whether I ride, bike or run on the road at night, I always wear reflective gear to make myself more visible. The road where this happened is very hilly. The driver most likely didn't not see her until the last minute and because she was riding without reflective gear at night he's lucky he saw her at all. Second of all, it is a very busy road that should not be ridden on horseback during the day, much less at night.

The driver should not be blamed, although I'm sure he will feel the guilt of this for the rest of his life. The girl should have taken the horse back to his home long before it got dark. A good, tolerant pony lost his life for nothing. I'm not even blaming the rider. She was too young to know the consequences of her actions. She had too little training in horses. She had no idea how to handle a horse in this situation or how poor their eyesight is at night. She should have had proper supervision and training. Period.

This is so very, very tragic and there are no words that can comfort this child's family. May they find some healing in knowing that they will see their child again, she has just gone on before them.
I have a child the same age and she rides also. There are inherent risks in everything one does in life. She died doing what I'm sure she loved to do- ride her horse.
My heartfelt sympathy also goes out to the the poor gentleman who hit them. Animals do run out in front of cars and horses spook and it is difficult to see at dusk. There is no blame here-

I live about a mile from where the accident occurred, I knew the girl from our FFA chapter and I also have horses. I can't tell you much about the accident except that riding on Marcy at night was not a very safe thing to be doing in the first place. I don't blame anyone for the accident; horses are unpredictable, but you know that going into it. There isn't much traffic on our road, but people treat it like a super highway. It's hard to wrap my head around this right now, but Chastity was a good girl who looked like she was going to go places in life. I was super shocked and I can tell you my family is as well (we heard about it from a friend who was afraid the victim was my little sister).

Right now, my thoughts and prayers go out to the families of both the victim and the man who was driving, this isn't going to be easy for either of them.

My sympathy to the families involved in this accident. A young girl trying to get in the time doing something she loved, Something spooked her horse, and trying to get the control to turn or move quickly on blacktop or a paved road of any kind is impossible. I know that from experience. The horses feet tend to go out from under them as 2 hard surfaces give no purchase.

Maybe this is a good reason to keep the clocks as they were a week ago, let the people have the daylight in the evenings when not in school!

This accident happened close to where we live. I heard the news on TV and my heart sank. My prayers go out to this young girl's family. I cannot imagine the grief they are dealing with tonight and in the days to come.
A young girl is no longer with us and it was an accident. The driver, the horse, the girl are not to blame. I am sure her parents will play this evening over and over in their heads wondering if only ...
The negative, judgmental posts on this thread are SO insensitive; they make me sick. I hope those posters never have to be on the other side of a tragedy like this and can continue to live in their ignorance.
