The investigators need to find out if any of the drivers spooked the horse intentionally.
I quit riding my horse on the road because many drivers love to do things to try and spook horses: blowing their horn, speeding up, etc. I have seen them do it even with children on their pony's. It may not even be the guy who actually hit them, it could have been the guy immediately in front of that car, etc.

My prayers to all! This is a tragic accident that every person can learn from. There are many people out there that think "it's funny" to blow their car horns or rev their engines to see if they can get a reaction. Just ask the Amish communities. However, they don't think about the outcome when they do these things. They put the rider, the horse and whom ever else is on the roadway at risk. A horse relies a lot on their hearing and have two blind spots for seeing, directly behind and directly in front of them. This is why we don't ride our horses on the road or along side a road, because of those irresponsible people out there that haven't got a clue!
Please keep this family in your prayers! What a shame that this had to happen!

Is it legal to ride a horse on the road? Seems very unsafe.

Marcy Rd is not in Canal Winchester. It runs east and west across 674. About 4 miles from Ashville. Sad for the little girl.

How unfortunate. My heart goes out to the girl's family and the driver of the car. How awful.
Yes, it is legal to ride horses on the road.
You don't know that the driver could prevent the accident. The wind could have spooked the horse and it could have run right into the path of the car. There doesn't HAVE to be blame placed on anybody. Horses can just spook for no reason - leaves crunching under their feet, the wind, etc. You take that chane anytime you get on a horse. They weigh 1000 lbs and are prey animals. For whatever reason the child lost control of the animal and the unthinkable happened. Let's not be so quit to place blame. It just happened.
Does anyone know if the girl was wearing a helmet?

Who cares what `Burg gets the credit for the accident location? You people are MORONS!!
The story is that a young girl has lost her life doing what I will assume she loved to do, and that is riding her horse. Her family and friends are devastated I am sure.
Focus on important matters and leave the idiocy out of the picture.
My thoughts go out to this family.

The girl wasn't riding the horse on the road. She boards the horse on Marcy Road and lives in the Slate Ridge Housing development. She rode the horse in the yard of a residential house that runs parallel to Marcy road and backs the property of the farm. She rode nearly everyday and I would always hear/see her riding the horse back to the farm and it was typically dark outside. Usually, she would have a car escorting her in the development to provide light, if it was dark out.

The horse darted from the yard, onto the road, and into the path of the car, which caused the fatality. Although I haven't seen the official police report, I still believe speed was a contributing factor. The cars drive very very fast on Marcy Road and the area in which the accident occurred is very open and the road is at a decline.

Here is a map of the yard and farm to give you a visual. She road off of East Slate Ridge Drive.

I am sorry that she is dead, but kids die all the time. It's tragic, but that is reality folks.
In the big scheme of things, an affluent American child living in semi-rich Canal Winchester died riding a pet that most people in the world will not ever be able to afford.
What about the kids that will be dying of hunger today? Maybe we should kill the horse and give the meat to some hungry people...
Geez, meow... so because you are green with envy, it is somehow supposed to be less of a tragedy that this child died? Any time a child dies, it's a tragedy. Doesn't matter if they come from a homeless family or a family with wealth. And I hate to break it to you yutz, everyone in Canal Winchester isn't rich. And as for speaking of horses, I believe we just heard from the rear end of one. Must be really exhausting to walk through the world with such hatred and jealousy every day. May God show more mercy on you than you have shown for others.

Agreed. My family owned a horse and I rode it in 4-H. They were not rich by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, owning a horse made them more poor! They worked extra hours, cut back and I even took a part time job when I was old enough to help offset some of the cost.

My heart goes out to the family, I'm sure the driver didn't do anything wrong. It was dark out, horses spook at everything. I used to ride in the road all the time, it's dangerous, you're literally taking your life into your own hands.
