I so agree with Redneck Italian, why should the restrooms be free. If you use the restroom in a restaurant you are 9 out of 10 times there because you are purchasing a meal, which is priced to reflect the cost of restroom priveleges.
I have traveled all over the US and foreign countries and I know Virginia can be operated more effiecently and less costly if all the "freebie" that so many people consider they are owed are elimanated or reduced.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, and would be more than willing to pay a toll, but the tolls would probably send more and more people to local gas stations to use their facilities. It's very difficult traveling w/ young children.

I think that these stops should have remained open and that they could have found other ways to reduce costs.
Closing these will cause more accidents because people are no able to get off and rest for a while and if they have car problems they could be put into dangerous situations.
I64 and I81 are already too dangerous with the amount of truck traffic couple that with tired drivers.....

I purpose a .50 cent toll at all entrance ramps, with no toll plazas on the highways, they tend to clog traffic and cause traffic jams, but when placed on the entrance ramps, they allow the road to stay moving at a steady pace. then the only other two places that need them is when you enter the state to the north and south on 81 n 95 and 64 on the west side, imagine if every driver on those roads this weekend paid just .50 cent to ride on our roads, how much money it would have raised for our state ?
As for traveling with young children, it's only hard when you enable them to make it hard, I have four children and we traveled with them when they were small, we would limit the junk they ate and drank to limit the amount of stops made and have traveled thousands of miles with them without any difficulties, children only rule over their parents when the parents allow them to rule !
Ok, charge everyone an entrance toll to the interstate. Who does that hurt the most, the small family run trucking company. This also hurts all trucking companies who will in turn pass the cost down to us all. The truckers are already paying high fees to operate and to deliver the products that we need anyway.

why not put a toll plaza at the entrance to every rest area, make the people pay to use them and maybe even draw a profit as well! Guess it takes someone from a toll state to think of that idea, or better yet make our interstates toll roads, that would help our cash strapped state in a huge way
So where are you from anyway? It's obvious you aren't from around here. I've traveled a few states with tolls and the roads are terrible -- maybe you need to counsel them.

I kinda agree with redneck guy. A toll wouldn't be too bad. but make it low. the other rest stops are packed when you stop there. I hate standing in line to take a pee. It just stinks.

I know it's mean but everytime I drive past a rest stop that has been closed I think of that catchy jingle from a years ago, you know the one that says "gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now, gotta go, gotta go right now!", and then I pray theres an exit with a sheetz coming up.

Does anyone know whether tolls are allowed on highways that are part of the interstate system?

According to Ohio Department of Trasportations statistics, 20% of drink containers found along that state's interstate highways contain urine. That is their solution to closed interstate rest areas. I predict an increase in sales of funnels for the ladies, what else can we do?

I think everyone is missing the big picture. With these rest areas closed accident rates on the interstates will rise. We make our living by delivering freight on time, if we are unable to pull in a rest area and sleep when we need it you will se more and more fatiged drivers on the road. Which in turn will cause fatalities. Its not just the fact of having to take a pee. And for those that say better trip planning would take care of that there is no trip planning in the world that could take care of this problem, considering the amount of rest areas closed. I have seen it already we have to park on on ramps. How safe is this, not very but safer than driving when you cant keep your eyes open.

I agree. VDOT is making a huge mistake by closing many of our rest areas. It will leave many drivers & truckers w/ no place to stay overnight or take a break from 81 (Should I-81 be considered an interstate or the new Rt. 11?). We now can barelyy even take a break to use the bathroom or stretch or use the vending machines. This will force many drivers to exit the interstate and use a private facility (gas stations, restaurants, etc.). It seems that VDOT could add a toll booth at the entrance to each rest area and charge 25 cents or something that could help raise funds for VDOT to make road improvements and to help keep the rest areas open. But, it seems that VDOT just doesn't care.

is that VDOT is a group of idiots led by a gaggle of morons. No matter how much money's available, the roads will still not be repaired nor will tunnels be maintained properly. Their engineering is so bad that two sections of overpass being built on I64 at Mercury Blvd. in Hampton missed lining up by over 6 feet! And the idiots didn't realize it until the job was almost completed. Contractor had to tear down and rebuild at taxpayer expense. VDOT needs to be replaced with new personnel and leadership and this time hire people who have some idea what a road is!

is that we've got to learn to hold it until we get out of state! Either that or install tubes in the car that drain under the car so we can pee on the way!
