In 2006 I went before the city council to discuss property that I was interested in purchasing for a house. The development where the lot was located was within the city limits. I had asked if the road would be maintained by the city. The council said that it would be maintained in the winter. My wife and I went ahead a purchased the property and put a house on it with the assurance that the city would honor their word that the road would be maintained. The first year the council honored their word and during the winter we had no trouble getting up and down the hill to our house.
The next year with new administration in place the city council recanted on their agreement to maintain the road in this development. The reason they are giving me is that the road is not built to code. My thought is that they knew the road wasn't built to code when they included the develpoment into the city limits in the first place. They also knew this when I attended the meeting and asked them if the road would be maintained. They have no problem taking the property tax money that I and my neighbors pay but apparently feel no sense of honor toward upholding their agreement. When I called to talk to the city clerk he said that the agreement was made under an old administration and that this was a new administration with a new leader. I say that this reasoning lacks any integrity because the new leader was on the city council when I was told the road would be maintained by the city. I think this has more to do with a personal feud than road specifications. I could be wrong but I don't feel that personal agendas should be brought into the sphere of local politics at the expense of others not involved. All I know is that last year I paid close to a $1,000 dollars in towing and repair expenses to my vehicles because the road is being maintained as it said it would be.
