Clayton man killed in one-vehicle crash

A 23-year old should know better than to get behind the wheel after drinking. What a tragic waste of life. Thank God he didn't kill anyone else.

You drink, you drive, you die. Also glad he went out alone.

Clayton is far from other towns and thus an emotional crucible for residents. It is a place of high wind, flat land, no trees, no place to hide. The tricky, dishonest, and lazy are soon gone as it takes acceptance of others and work to stay there. Those who are "discovered" stay, those who are "found out" leave. The people who are still there help one another, work hard, and have a commitment to community. It lost population until recently when the city fathers figured out how to keep people there. Now the town has a prison and new jail. Institutionalized incarceration has stabilized if not increased the population. Even with new jobs as prison employees, the town is 2,650 souls or so, about two thousand less than ten years ago. Clayton is so small that trials need no witnesses as everyone already knows who did it and the people only read the weekly newspaper, The Leader, to make sure it got the story right. The one private place in town that served liquor by the drink with a dispenser's license, The Eklund, went broke despite about 2 million dollars in Federally guaranteed loans to that one business. It is a great place with great people and a few old sore heads. About 50,000 people in Albuquerque are from Union County (Clayton)or descended from people from Clayton. Clayton is about half Hispanic and half Anglo. Go Yellow Jackets.

Why is "Clayton" or Union County being scrutinized. These type of accidents could or do happen in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, or any area in New Mexico many times; and for the very same reasons.(kids are bored, angry, peer presssure, learned behavior from parents, etc.) Too many of our youngsters are beginning to drink at WAY too early of an age.- Like 9-10 yrs. old.
