Full story: Stamford Advocate

Cutting through red tape and lengthy governmental procedure, the city is sparing no time and expense in an attempt to install water lines to bypass contaminated Scofieldtown area wells.

Mayor Malloy and board president Martin have been doing a great job pushing this project through. Keep up the good work!:}

I don't ever want to hear anyone from north stamford complain that they don't get any city services or that the city ignores them. EVER.

There are many, many people around the Stanwich Road and Cat Rock area who are fearful that their wells (along with the wetlands) will be contaminated by the sewage plant proposed for the Stanwich School expansion. No risks are acceptable!

I'm glad that the needs of the most affected, nearest residents are being taken care of with dispatch - Stamford Operations can really shine when put to the test.

However, the news that testing has been limited to the 500-foot area surrounding the Park is most distressing. We need to test the entire aquifer and the Poorhouse Brook and the Mill River. Months have now passed without this happening.

I know one gentleman with stomach cancer who fished for years in the Mill River. Is his case related? Should fishing be banned in the river? What about the wild critters who have no choice? What is our responsibility to them?

We need to know how safe our water actually is.

They are not testing for heavy metals.
They are not addressing the concerns of the entire area north of the parkway.
Water travels. It travels farther in wet years like we just had.The city created a huge problem and, like "the cap",is buying time by supplying water to a few homes.
It is only a matter of time before everyone with a well in North Stamford will get to enjoy the benefits of carcinogens in their water.Oh. And they just sort of admitted to culpability for all you class action buffs.
This is an election year cure.

Will the Mill River Park work affect the water table in North Stamford?
Hydrolic pressure is amazing stuff.
Year to year is changes depending on conditions.

If properties have a septic system I don't believe they would get a WPCA bill. If I lived in North Stamford I'd do my homework on carbon filtration of the known contaminants plus heavy metals since that is apparently a current unknown. And, carbon filters require servicing every year they're in place. I guess there will be costs to remove all those filters once the new water main service is operational.

Dear Stamford Home -

I can't believe you could be so ignorant!!! We are not paying because it is poison the city has allowed our families to ingest - KNOWINGLY FOR MORE THE A DECADE!!!!! They are trying to pay off their sins.

If you think its about not paying for a city service or getting something for free you are out of your mind.

When you have a drink of water, shower and cook for your family - think about this conversation...think of it again when you kiss your children good night and sleep peacefully...I KNOW YOU WILL NOT HAVE THE SAME FEARS AND CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR FAMILIES LONG TERM HEALTH KEEPING YOU UP ALL NIGHT AS WE WILL...

Its that mentality that let city officials think it was OK to hide this information for years - ignoring our health and worrying only about the city's finances....

SHAME ON YOU.

maybe you should move. It's been public knowledge that a dump was at scofield from the 30's-70's. Did you not know that when you brought your home? It never crossed your mind that living next to a landfill might pose a hazzard? I never said the city should not run the water main. I just stated the fact that they are doing it at a fast pace, and that finally, north stamford residents should finally FINALLY, stop with their whining about "not getting any city serviecs and being ignored by the city".

I live in North Stamford and I still don't any city services. We are charged more taxes, zoned differently, and treated like the redheaded stepchild of Downtown Stamford. And I don't care if you agree or not. But don't make it sound like that jackass Mayor is doing this for all of us in North Stamford.

Clean water is the first priority, sewers can come later, if ever.

Why do we have a town and a city of Stamford?

If Malloy was not running for Governor and did not want to have this mess as his record legacy, this would not have moved so quickly. Some politicans can be good when they have to.

We don't. They were consolidated in 1949.
Sewers are not the issue.
Adequate testing is #1!
They are mistakenly not looking for heavy metals.
The Aquarion mains and hookups are #2 in this case.
Mapping and perimeter testing of the aquifer is critical. Everyone needs to know where and how the chemicals are spreading, with constant monitoring.
Testing the brook's watershed is also critical.

Then there's the issue of removing contents of the dump, neutralizing and properly disposing of it.
There's the matter of tracking cancer cases and deaths among present and former residents, and on going health monitoring/care for them. These two are the MAJOR issues!

The dump will need eco restoration. It's basically a wetland. Then there's the loop closer, and I don't know if there is one - neutralizing or binding the contaminants in the soil and aquifer.
This one's going to be with us a long time.

I think that it is a shame that there are some people who have written in on this blog that have absolutely no understanding of what the people of this toxic polluted area are going through. What happens to these lives is happening to you too. We are all connected in this. its not about money, its not about whose taxes goes to what or where.....its about lives that have been destroyed and people who are hurt, and worried for their children and their childrens children.....and how much more suffering needs to take place before we all wake up and realize we are all responsible for one another...
who ever allowed this dump to continue killing people all these years ..knowing that lives were at stake....
what kind of human are you?
how do you live with yourself?
why do you still need to cover your tracks. Admit to it
appoligize at least for heavens sake. do the right thing
TEST FOR HEAVY METALS...DON'T LET ONE MORE PERSON SUFFER UNNECESSARILY.
WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.
DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!

Thanks Greenthroat, now if only we as a state can get the D.E.P. and Blumenthal to step up and stop hiding 25 more similar dump sites that are poisoning people as well, like the one across the street from me .

Then, there's the question of "closer to home."

One must wonder where Stamford's Environmental Protection Board - the City's inland wetlands and watercourses agency - has been all these years.
The agency that will take residence in your wallet if you cast a shadow on its turf, has been stangely silent on this issue. EPB Director David Emerson was at last Tuesday's meeting - not on the floor with other City and State officials - but quietly sitting in the bleachers.
Then, there's our Stamford Health Department, another agency that's been pretty much AWOL when it comes to the Scofieldtown Dump!

A loved one gets hold of the wrong end of the stick today, causing endless hassle and fuss. They're likely to get upset in the process, so you have to calm them down, and that could lead to a squabble. You may also have to cope with discord when discussing family matters, with certain people getting bogged down in daft details that you think have nothing to do with the main issue.
