We ought to give the kids a break - Greenwich Time

Full story: Greenwich Time

Back before we lost our collective minds and began shrieking with horror at the thought of kids having fun on their own , they used to do things like find a vacant field, turn it into a makeshift diamond and ...

For the first time in a very long time, an editorial from the Greenwich Time that makes sense, is selfless and logical.

Well done!!

Good thing Lavery is making the decision, if it was Tesei it would take months before he could make a decision and then he would agree to only what those out of town lawyers tell he what to say!

I like how the neighbors say that these kids or as they say ''young folks'' are not respectful when its them who just stare the kids down when the kids say hi to them. Lets be real....wait they are not real people. Lets all face it if they were rela people, the kids could actually talk to them. I do not see how the town does not see that.

As an adult, I am appalled at the reaction of these neighbors. I understand they want their quietude, but to squash the wholesome directives and energy of this group of teens is downright shameful. I didn't even believe there were teenagers who would value an old-fashion game of wiffle ball any more!

Money, entitlement and arrogance runs deep in the veins of too many Fairfield County residents and their hearts and minds have become hardened and rigid like Old Ebenezer Scrooge.

Simple ingenuity and creativity — that's all these boys did. Work with these youths to find compromise, perhaps. Maybe limit the field to this summer only… at the very least. Adults should applaud these teens wholesome efforts and intentions, not squelch them.

I agree with Sheila’s comments. Greenwich is becoming an arrogant town with little regard for neighbors. It’s a shame that the few idiots are ruining the once proud town.

They should be allowed to play adults are scared of kids getting bad ideas from sitting on the computerr all day and these kids are just here to have fun.The Neighbors Only Care so That their property gets damaged which is unlikely because the kids won't have the field up in the winter or the fall. So it really shouldn't bea threat to the neighbors

Thank God I live in Vermont.
Sure, we have our problems, but we also have large fields, green forests and blue rivers for kids to play.
Urbanization is part of what is wrong with the world. Small and rural allows for clean air and good living. These kids were trying to get outside and play. They could have been inside eating junk food and staring at a screen.
That is probably what Liz Pate does all day.
I hope the town realizes what a strong message they can make to their children if they not only let them play, but hire them as caretakers and vote them into the parks and rec governance board.
I wish you all could live in beautiful Vermont, but then it would be just another suburban wasteland.
So, it is best you stay where you are and make the best of it.

I saw this story and could not believe it. I'm 35 and I grew up in Minnesota. It's a little more peaceful out here, and we're a little more trusting of our neighbors, but, c'mon! A bunch of kids go out, do something like this and here's the situation that we have? Give me a break. This isn't North Minneapolis and these kids don't seem like they're smoking a bunch of Meth. They are out playing, having fun, building something, and having fun. My parents would tell us to go outside all the time....."go do something...don't watch TV".....this was before every house had 4 TVs, internet, and Atari really did kind of stink back then. And, as a kid who WAS "the remote control" ("go change the channel son") Kids today are extremely lazy, most of America is overweight and lazy, and the absolute lack of creativity by kids that is brought on by the absolutely crappy education system doesn't help either. Let's pour more money into schools. Right. I'll bet these kids turn out to be entrepeneurs. You just watch. Back these kids up, keep an eye out, and let them have fun outside for crying out loud. This is one of the greatest stories I've read in a long time.
Keep your eye on the ball too. That knuckler is fun to watch your friends whiff at too!
Go kids!!!

Could the GT please justify its 1.25 FMV? The adjoining lots with house are worth less. Why so high?
