My husband and i want to visit both Asheville and Greenville to see which one we like to relocate to. We are tired of the big city of Pittsburgh and the winters. Both cities look beautiful in photos. How do they compare? Which is better? Which has the mildest winter? Also other suggestions of southern cities or towns would be appreciated. Just weighing our options. Thanks.

I have been researching as well, My oldest decided to go to a Greenville area school and she likes it thus far.. I've researched Greenville, Lancaster, Simpsonville and Columbia. The problem with looking is you can find what you think is a great place then keep an eye on local news, etc. that is where you may change your mind. Good luck looking! If you find a nice spot, please share! We are relocating from the North with family and pets.

I can help you guys out. Just got back from visiting Asheville & Greenville. Greenville by a landslide! Asheville gets touted as so beautiful but i don't think it is. It has some nice resorts and the Biltmore, and beautiful old buildings but the city is overcrowded and strange. The people i met were strange not all of them. Lots of alternative lifestyles there. Very expensive and snooty. Believe me Asheville has nothing to brag about. I loved Greenville a beautiful city especially downtown with its old buildings and does not have the alternative lifestyles. Greenville is also cheaper. I still prefer Charlottesville which i visited in may but Greenville better than Asheville!

Come to Dandridge TN, near Gatlingburg and Pigeon Forge. We retired here 6 years ago and love it. The cost of living here in a tax free state and cost of living is several thousands of dollars a year less than NC or SC, we looked and checked them all. Lake property is abundant here. You will be sorry if you don't come and see the best kept secret in the country.

We go thorough Dandridge area and visit the Bush bean store when we are vacationing in the smokey mountains. It must be paradise living there all the time. Beautiful country. I am sure the cost of living is much less there than here in South Carolina.

I hated Asheville,NC. Extremely crowded and the people are obsessed with being hip. The hippie, gays ect. got on my nerves after being there just one day. An extremely expensive town. Lacks southern roots, they even screw their bbq up. Lots of transplants from Fla. and up north. Most of the people I met were cold and cliche. Plus some people there bragged Asheville was a mini san francisco ha! Asheville is not even as nice as Pittsburgh! I found Greenville to be better than Asheville. Its artsy but not trendy like Asheville. Its less expensive and near the mountains. Asheville is in the mountains and will get alot more snow. I decided I'm moving to Greenville. Hope I helped you.

Asheville is hipper but to hectic and is growing rapidly. To many outside influences due to Asheville being trendy. Asheville will be like Atlanta just wait and see. Greenville is real nice and growing at a steady pace. While Ashevill eis based on tourism Greenville has a better job market and a nice place to raise kids. Asheville has alternative lifestyles and not a great place to raise kids. Greenville is also cheaper while Asheville is expensive due to its cache. Greenville is the clear winner.

I didn't like Asheville. Its expensive but really Greenville has as much to offer. Asheville also has lots of arrogant artsy fartsy types. To many trendy people there. Greenville is a nice down to earch city that is artsy without trying so hard. I chose Greenville. cheaper, nice people, better weather in the winter. However I would love to live in Charleston,SC. but its to expensive.( sigh)

Greenville for sure. I moved here from Charlotte and love it. I checked out Asheville. My wife and I were not fond of Asheville at all and we always wonder why so many people love it. Different strokes for different folks. Greenville also has more christians and is cheaper to live here. All pluses in my book.

Greenville has such friendly people who are christian and easygoing and great southern food. Also just 45 minutes or more from Greenville are over 3,000 ft. mountains and the gorgeous Lake Jocasse. Greenville also has a nice arts scene.
Asheville is really popular and was featured on Good Morning Americas top 10 most beautiful places in America segment. No offense Asheville can't compete with the others on the list such as Hawaii, Sedona, aspen colorado! Also lots of the people have that stuck up attitude I'm better than you mentality. Asheville is so expensive and snobby and I don't feel comfortable there. Hope that helps.

My wife and I are also trying to decide between Greenville and Asheville. Both are beautiful places but we're more concerned about the collective culture of each place. I know that Asheville is very liberal and artsy, which is fine with us. Can anyone tell me what Greenville's social culture is like? Is it more republican or democrat? Is it anti gay? How about race relations? Local arts and music scene? Organic co ops or farmers markets? Wind based electricity? Clean water and air? Clean manufacturing? Religious tolerance? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Wes V everyone likes different things. But my husband and i chose Greenville because its cheaper than Asheville. We got a house for 200,000 and we looked at similar houses in Asheville and the cheapest were 600,000 for the same type house. The people in Greenville were friendlier than in Asheville. We met alot of stuck up people in Asheville. Greenville is more down to earth. The weather is better in the winter although Asheville is cooler in the summer. I have found Greenville's social culture to be a mix of conservative & liberal. Greenville is artsy but not trendy like Asheville. Greenville basically does not have the hippies and as many gays but its still artsy. Asheville tries to be so hip but its faux really ridiculous. There are gays in Greenville not like Asheville though. Asheville has the better music scene. There are farmer markets in Greenville. Asheville has the organic stores. Asheville is more polluted than Asheville. Asheville sits in a bowl surrounded on 3 sides by mountains and is a tourist city. The french broad river is part brown. Read about it online. I meant Asheville is more polluted than Greenville. Tell me what you decide. Hope I helped. Have noting against Asheville but that's my true feelings.

Thanks so much for info Kitty. We currently live in a large city and want to move to a smaller town, but still want to have a variety of things to do. Plus, my wife is the artsy type and really wouldn't be happy someplace without some sort of art scene. She's allergic to a common food preservative so the organic food is a necessity. If my research is correct, Greenville has two organic grocery stores --- Whole Foods and Earth Eats (I may have the name wrong). Asheville is beautiful, but expensive, particularly if you want to live in the city, which we do. We'd like to be able to walk to most places. I'm having some trouble finding Greenville's electric companies and sources. Where we live now, we can chose our company and type (wind, water, coal, etc or a mixture). Could you steer me in the right direction? Also, is Greenville humid in the summer? Hot I can stand but high humidity I'd really like to avoid. Thanks for any feedback.

WesV I wanted to ask you have you and your wife ever been to Asheville or Greenville? I ask this cause some people want to move places they have never been. Can't help you out on the electric companies. Greenville gets humidnot as bad as say Charleston or for example Austin, TX. I would check out Charlottesville,Va. Its gorgeous there. Its a college town just 45 minutes from Shenedoah National Park. You can kayak in Charlottesville as well. Rock climb in Shenedoah if your into that. Charlottesville is artsy, there are top wineries there and in albemarle county. Thats horse country as well plus monticello is there. I'm looking to move there in a couple of years. Charlottesville is not as humid as Greenville.

Greenville!!!!!!!!!! Did I make myself clear?? Greenville is artsy with jobs to boot without the excess baggage Asheville has which are tourist, hippies& just bizarre people. Also Greenville is growing steady smart growth while Asheville is just building for the heck of it. Don't need to tell you that Greenville is cheaper. Asheville is not kid friendly. Do you have kids>>? Some bed& breakfast hotels and apartments don't allow kids under 12! Asheville just has great marketing Greenville is a place to live.

Although bizarre people don't really bother us, Asheville is probably too expensive. We don't have kids but we like to have fun so it's important that there are things to do. I would be happy out in the quiet country but my wife wouldn't. Do you know the source of the electricity? Trying to figure out if it's coal, water, wind or nuclear.
