The county is LOSING money in taxes that are desperately needed here. Why? I moved away for a long time and came back to a town that is 20 years behind everyone else. Greenup WILL remain "dry" until the older generation is gone and the new generation is in control. Until then we'll keep paying ohio and boyd taxes for a "legal" substance that your grandpa probably distilled or still does. Give it 15-20 years and you might see a beer joint on the corner. Maybe... Maybe the tax revenue could get the county an unemployment office or something for the kids to do. Maybe...

When Ashland first voted wet, it was precinct only for nice restaurants. Courts then said you can sell packaged beer in convenience stores, etc... In other words, once voted in you open the floodgates.
p.s. I have nothing against alcohol sales, just stating the facts.
and as a result for ashland going wet all those years ago, economy boosted, jobs created and look around people are not roaming around drunk. they even act kind of responsible, not perfect but responsible.

Whenever you read a post that sounds like a very illiterate 1st grader wrote, with Zero correct punctuation. You can almost bet its Geraldine Bear!!! She doesn't work so she has plenty of time to post on topix. It's a shame but your sub-par IQ gives you away every time. I would say your attitude makes you ugly but it's just one of the many things that make you ugly!!!!

Why vote no? What are your reasons? The people who drink, do so anyway. They go to Ironton, Ashland, Portsmouth. Just because Greenup County doesn't sale it doesn't mean residents don't drink it.
Do you not want the economy here in this county to grow? If not, vote no. Do you like the unemployment rate here in GC? If so, vote no.
If GC allowed the sale of alcohol, restaurants like Applebees could open here. Even smaller, non-chain restaurants could open, which would bring tax revenue and provide jobs. It would also mean people could stay in GC when choosing where to go eat on Friday or Saturday night. Even people who don't drink would go eat at these restaurants. I don't think I've ever ordered an alcoholic drink at Applebees or the Outback, but my family eats there a lot. I'd rather spend my money inside GC county so we'd be the ones benefitting, but Gerbers, Short Stop and Giovannis gets old week after week.
If there is more opportunity for people, they may move here, which would boost property taxes. This county needs money. This county needs jobs. This county needs things for children to do. One way to help with all that is to simply allow the sale of alcohol. It wouldn't be the end of the world if someone could go inside Super Quik or Foodland and buy a case of beer. Actually, it'd be just the opposite. Those local businesses would grow and GC would profit from it. It'd be the same people who buy alcohol already who'd be purchasing it, they'd just be buying from local businesses instead of driving to another county.

I agree 100%. I say whoever is involved, good for them. It shows they actually care about growth in this county. Look at education here. If our economy grew and we made GC a more inviting place for business owners to want to come open a business and buy a house, the county would generate more taxes that could benefit the schools and our children's education. Not to mention it'd bring in more jobs that, in case some of you haven't noticed, are desperately needed.
It doesn't matter who wants GC to be wet or who is pushing for it or if you agree with their political or personal views. What matters is the fact that this county is in desperate need for economic growth.
Prohibition didn't work, alcohol is legal. Let's take advantage of that and use the sale of it to boost our economy right here in GC.

The drunks are already here. If you haven't noticed, open your eyes and look at all the people you see in the grocery store, post office, and even the people driving down the road. Of greenup went wet, it would just bring more business to this little town.

I couldnt have said it better myself! Yep you're right, economy does run in a cycle! If Greenup goes wet it will look as rundown as Ironton, Portsmouth, Vanceburg etc. does now! Greenup is never going to be bigger than it is now! All the big wigs in the state said that if the Ky. Lottery passed it would help schools, roads, etc. and what has it done? They raise the taxes every chance they get and our roads have went to hell, all of the schools out in the county have been closed all because the funds never get filtered down to where its needed! And why is that? Because until the good ole buddy system changes, it will never amount to anything. The officials in the county knows what I am talking about. You scratch my back and then the hell with you! Come election time I will be out along with a bunch more to make changes but it wont be to vote the county wet! It will be to get rid of those that only care for themselves!! Oh yeah, I am not a bible thumper! I am a taxpaying citizen the same as you that also cares for the future of the old and young people in town and in the rural areas!

I live in Greenup and me and my friends are regulars at The End Zone, and Melini Cucina. Both are in Ironton. BTW, The Fuzzy Duck is kind of a dive, but they're Philly cheeseteaks are bursting with win.

I think Greenup looks just as run down as just about every other town in the tri state. It's just a lot smaller than most. And I don't think that beer at super quik would destroy the town. True, alcohol sales won't make Greenup a boomtown. But we probably would benefit with a resaraunt or two. Maybe even a decent hotel would come of it. It surprises me that Greenup, considering it's location, isn't a big truck-stop like Grayson is.

You can argue it all you want, but the facts are, industry follows entertainment!!! Toyota came to Georgetown 10DAYS after it became WET!!! NO that's not the reason why, BUT Toyota told them they would not come there unless they brought in alcohol (which brings in restaurants, hotels ETC). Check out the industrial giant city's and look what they have, 1.river ports 2.major highways 3.the railroad 4. Things to do , with all these, it brings #5. INDUSTRY -----jobs!!!! Greenup has all this EXCEPT 4 & 5!!!! Do your home work and weigh it out but for a better life and to allow our kids to raise their kids here, this is a must!!!

You can argue all you want! Greenup Co has had industry before such as CSX, National Mine and others and what happened to all the money that came from the taxes from those companies? Anyone can look at all of the neighboring counties and they have better roads with less industries in their counties. Carter and Lewis Co doesnt have any county road that hasnt been blacktopped with very little industries in their counties with Carter Co having the ham plant and a couple sewing factories in Olive Hill and Lewis Co having a shoe factory. Greenup Co has had more industry in our county with less improvements than both of those counties put together. Misappropiation of funds speak for itself. How is a few beer joints and restaurants serving alcohol going to help bring industry when it was already has been here and gone?
