You can tell by your post that you were a Greeneville student ! I hope you "fare" well in life like your teacher said ! Hard to believe you went from being suicidal to everything is just peachy in just two hours?
I don't see where he says his life is peachy. I see that he had a life of difficulty, and motivated by the concern of his teachers he managed to find the strength to better his life. He has probably had to put up with bullies like you his entire life. I wish him well and hope he continues to fare well.

<quoted text>Hilarious.....All they will do with that tax money is raise teacher salaries and benefits. That's all the board and director are interested in. The money won't be spent on the children. Never enough textbooks, kids have to furnish everything but the kitchen sink for their class. Never enough soap in the bathrooms. Tonight's paper said, they want to raise the property tax 20 cents so ALL school system employees get a raise again this year. They are even holding out a bone to other county departments trying to say that some of that tax money will get a raise for them if they will vote for the school system to get their money. I hope those commissioners don't sell out on their voters. It will be remembered if they do. Lot of wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes. Seems that there is more to this deficit and closing schools than meets the eye. To be continued........
Come to the city where it is all about sports and the worship of football. Cuts are bring made all over the system and coaches are getting additional supplements. Building are needing repairs and Burlry Stafium gets new lights. Go Devils!

ok i have read these post and i think that there do need to be cuts made. start with some of the things like extra language classes. Most kids around here will never use them and also when my eight year old can take chinease language class in school but cant get the teacher to help her understand simple math there is a problem. I can only say that we pay enough taxes and where is the lottery money?????? That was supose to fix the schools needing money at is why tennessee allowed the lottery ya know. Also if you look at the county school system they are behind on things. I changed my children to city school and they are struggling to catch up. So does the taxes to be raised. I say no because all that is going to happen is somebodies pockets will get lined and our children will still be suffering and sliding thru to the next grade just by the skin of there teath.......... Also the teacher who posted about twenty five min lunch breaks maybe you should try factory work where you work thru your breaks and lunch to try to meat production and you dont get paid and nobody cares because if you dont meat production your fired and you have to have your job, Or try one of these factories that you get a tweny min lunch and if your one min late your docked fifteen. I know some of what teachers do is hard to but it isnt physical labor and you sit a lot. I do say thank you to the few good teachers that we are blessed to have in this town tho.

Those of you who do not believe more money will better eeducate the students in the Greene County schools are probably correct. The primary problem with education is the break down in the family structure, lack of discipline, and lack of high expectations from parents. Those students attending Greene County schools that have secure and loving homes, have been taught respect for their parents, teachers, peers, and themselves are just as successful in school as anyone in the city system. The majority of the students in
You are just wrong. Most Greene County people are good, honest, hard-working people. Yes we have a few freeloaders, just like the city does (the housing project). So get off your high horse. You are like so many who are brainwashed to believe that the county teachers are working for slave labor. Dr. Kirk is quoted in the newspaper as saying that the mean salary of Greene County teachers is over $47,000, that include salary and benefits now, and the cadillac benefits they get when they retire. How many people do you know that get their insurance paid 100% after they retire until they're 65, or get huge bonuses of $10,000-30,000 dollars? How many of you get what you pay into retirement matched, or if your retirement system loses money investing in the stockmarket, the taxpayer has to make that up every year? I have nothing against teachers, a good one is an asset to this community. Just like anyone that contributes to this county, in any profession. Educators are just as important as any other worker, but not anymore important than any other profession. We all know great teachers. We all also know teachers that have done great harm to children, by being incompetent. All,(and not just Greene County) are guilty of passing teachers off from school to school until they retire. The teaching profession takes very good care of their own. That is a travesty too. So no I don't think teachers are underpaid. Honestly you can't get a straight answer about what they really make in salary and benefits because they don't want the taxpayers to know that their unions have negotiated these very expensive benefits. That salary amount was quoted by the director at a retreat in the Greeneville Sun. Many on this school board are benefitting from these benefits. The chairman has bragged to this community that alot of the benefits they have now were implemented when he was president of the teachers's union. Conflict of interest I would think. So teacher's you need to EDUCATE yourself on what your salary and benefits=gross pay really is. I think you would feel better.
And the pathetic city argument--we lose all our good teachers to the city---is really old too. We still have many, excellent teachers in the County System. Obviously Greeneville City loses teachers too, or they wouldn't be hiring any of ours. People move around in every profession, that's not unique to education. So truly the public is really tired of the same old, same old about the poor teacher pay. The public's educating themselves about where their tax dollars are really going. Most of it's going to raises and increased benefits for all school system employees. It's just that when they give these increases, they always cut the things that really affect students....like close a school, cut textbook budgets, academic coaches etc. it's all there in black and white. There are many newspaper articles about the cuts to the budget. All the cuts are due to raises and benefits, forget the kids or families that might be uprooted from their schools. Vote them all out....

Our county schools do need the money and I would be willing to pay that and more if the school board would all step down and get some real business people in there to run a multi-million dollar company. I do not blame the teachers and do not mind to give them raises, I have student loans and a ton of them,so yes I think those that go to college to get a better job deserve more money than the average worker! The waste in money does not include the people actually working with our children. I want to thank the majority (there is always one or two in every bunch you cannot include) of the teachers for taking such good care of our kids with the limited resouces. I also believe in sports even though I never played, however to tell us you have enough money in March 2012 to build a fieldhouse and then decide in June (3 months) you need to get more money or close a school or cut out all sports (especially after funding fieldhouses and bleachers) is blatantly showing us the board members have no clue in what they are doing! Step away and give our children and future employees a fighting chance to succeed!

<quoted text>This sounds like something Vicki Kirk herself would say and how dare you suggest that parents in the county do not love and support their children. How dare you. Parents in the city are nothing but social drinkers who teach their children that they are too good to work. Most of the daughters are breed and taught to chase after doctors or lawyers so they don't have to work. Most children from the city end up married to some rich dude and the women spend the rest of their lives going to some kind of useless clubs and playing golf while their husbands are visiting their girlfriends. Chapman to name just one. Give me a break.
Why don't both the city and county stop stereotyping people. Grow up! My child attends the city school system. I am not a social drinker and I have always raised my children to be independent. I encourage them to go to college and become what they dream they want to be. All this county/city crap is getting old....there are good and bad parents in both school systems.

I couldn't agree more about who's watching the books. I found out this week that the county school system doesn't have a budget director that has an accounting degree. So county schools has over a 45 million budget this year without an accountant to oversee the budget. No wonder they're in the trouble they're in. That's part of what the budget director is supposed to do....Keep a close eye on the budget and adivise the director and board accordingly. Like warn them against using so much undesignated fund balance, or knowing they're going overbudget on a building project. Why wouldn't a school system want a professional person with an acccounting degree in that position? Unbelievable. Oh, I bet it's because they can't afford one, might take away from employee benefits and raises.

Yes you are exactly right that is my greatest concern is missing a letter when I am typing on a phone. We should really worry more about people being exact on topic sorry spelled with an x, than our children. It is ok to bash people and bully people on here, but how dare I misspell a word. I very much apologize to everyone my misspelling of a word offended.

Yeah, sports are being held hostage so that we will support a tax increase. How do you propose to close Glenwood school, but not lay off one single employee? Reduce dead weght, trim the fat. Stop throwing good money after bad. I'm all for funding programs that work, but money will not fix our leadership void.

County commissioners be warned, we will not forget which side of this vote you stood on.

i am curious to know what happens to all the gate money collected at the games gate with any sports.and where does all the money goes when the so called fees are paid for each child as high as 5o dollaes per student. anything extra the parents pay for. the first wheel tax was suppose to pay for new buses but i still have the newspaper what the second 10 dollars was for and it went to the salaries of the sheriff and town officials and the general fund.it didnt mention schools, or roads and i believe the general fund is really being used for things that are not necessary and if we did what is intended for maybe it would be different. i work just as hard as any county or city employee and i havent had a raise in eight years, plus our insurance has changed and they have deducted 5 percent from employees pay. no one is happy and everyone is cutting back but we still have a job but as a tax payer why would i want to give a raise to a working county employee and have mine deducted.

Folks go to the Greeneville Sun website and go to the archives. Look up March 23,2012 where the chairman, and 3 other board members voted to pay off a personal loan for the athletic booster club using 36,000 taxpayer dollars. The whole story is there. This organization just happened to be in the chairman's district. The chairman brought this up last year too. The board voted then to pay 20,000 to this same group that wanted to jump in front of anothe high school that was supposed to get a fieldhouse first.
The chairman (this is in March 2012) says when some board members question spending taxpayer dollars to pay this loan off....chairman is quoted as saying,"I don't see any reason why we can't go ahead and do this,....We do have a strong fund balance that can very much afford $36,000". Then in MAY 2012 (2 MONTHS LATER), CLOSING A SCHOOL-GLENWOOD IS ON THE LIST OF CUTS BECAUSE THEY'RE DEFICIT IS ALMOST $1.2 MILLION DOLLARS. THIS NEW BUDGET THEY WANT FINANCED IS ALMOST 2 MILLION DOLLARS MORE THAN IT WAS LAST YEAR. WELL, IF THEY'VE CUT SOME THINGS, THEY'VE SURE ADDED A LOT OF THINGS. THIS IS A SPENDING PROBLEM FOLKS.......

Why can't gate money at athletic events go to fund coaching supplements???? Where does that money go??? Also, I can't understand why a field house should have to cost a half million dollars! Good grief! Think of the teachers that could be hired and the course offerings started at the high schools for that amount of money!!

Perfect, wonder how much bonuses will be after the property tax increase? Merry Christmas if you work for the county, make do with what you scrape by on everybody else.

Oh lest we forget, exactly one year ago... "In addition to the 1.6 percent raise, the school board will give all employees a $500 bonus before Christmas this year, they deserve this" says school board chairman Roger Jones.

The school board knew they were headed for catastrophe in 2012, but still yet they chose to spend without consequence in 2011, and our commissioners allowed it to happen.
$500 bonuses eight months ago and closing schools today. Where is the accountability?

TSSAA states tht coaching supplements have to be paid by the school board or the school itself
