I would vote yes to do away with sports programs in school. We need academics not sports. Our Tcap scores have declined over the years. We are delayed starting school. Stop with all the out of town trips to Play ball. Devote our tax money to academics & the arts.

Sports keep a lot of kids focused on school that wouldn’t be otherwise. You have to maintain certain GPA and other standards in order to play sports. Take that incentive away from some of these kids, and then see what the test scores look like. It wouldn’t be pretty. Sports are not the enemy. Look at just about every top public school in the state, and you will see that most of them also have top level athletics and bands. They tend to go together. The county school system needs to make cuts elsewhere, not cut sports or raise taxes. This problem can be solved, they just have to be willing to make the tough decisions and not take the easy way out.

The issue, as I see it, is NOT the value of a sports program and facilities, rather it is the current COSTS of funding and maintaining them. Schools are for education, period.

I like sports. If the costs were reasonable I could support keeping them. However, the facts are that the cost of sports programs ($586,000 for the CD fieldhouse!) are disproportionate to their value. We need to shut them down. There are plenty of other ways for kids to enjoy sports. In 5 or 10 years I would rather be known as the county with very high academic scores, than the county whose team won the big game. In 15 or 20 years that focus will pay off for the whole community. Winning the big games is a short term victory. Academic excellence is a lifelong gain.

Did the students ask for theis fieldhouse, did they vote for it, are those kids tax payers yet...come on get a life....Its the board that made this mess and now the taxpayers and kids are going to have to pay for it.

Schools are for education, period. The point is, sports bring value in many way to the schools, including academically. Taking the easy way out and cutting sports (instead of making other more realistic cuts) is not the best solution if you are looking at the overall best interest of the students. If you cut sports, then many students will begin to suffer academically as well. Sports provide an extra incentive to do well in school. Every other school system in the state has figured out a way to make this work in a tough economy. They are doing so without cutting sports. Are you telling me that Greene County can't do the same?

Keep in mind there are some kids from each class that do get scholarships from sports. Now it may not be to a big college. Take sports away and those kids most likely dont go to college.

Sorry but there are so many college graduates, that can't even find a job now. Having a college degree is not that great anymore. Learning a trade will get you a lot farther in life these days. High school sports just remind me of Al Bundy. Shoe salesman is about all that is left for them.

Yes let's just cut sports and have half of our students transfer to the city that way when can cut another school in a couple of years...... Most sports are self funded.... Yea ppl lets cut the only thing tht makes money at school..... A college degree isn't tht great but I highly doubt u have one and you cancel sports what are u going to do with the brand new field house? It will just sit there empty yea that's real smart ppl

I think you can transfer freely (without penalty) if your school doesn’t have a certain sport. That would seem to be a similar situation.

The problem with college graduates being unable to find a job comes down to a simple fact. Government interference. Between grants and government loans, we now have a surplus of college grads. The system provides incentive for everyone to go to college. Guess what? Everyone isn't college material. It is amazing the kids entering college that can't even write on a 5th grade level. The government ran higher education system will either graduate these idiots, who will gain little knowledge, or you'll see them drop out after a year or two with debt that they can't pay. Another prime example as to why the government needs to take a hands off approach!

A free academic program should continue to be provided for all students. Sports are extracurricular activities that are not required for a high school diploma. These activities should be funded by those who partipate in them. Participating families should also be paying coaching supplements instead of holding the taxpayer responsible. The supplements increase each year. When you have a coach who is teaching one class or no classes during the school day, why should education funding pay that salary? And before anyone says this isn't taking place, check and see. It is...

Just let those who want to participate in sports foot the bill. Yes, this could prohibit many who couldn't afford to play, but those with money would probably pay for them too. It is all about winning games, isn't ?

I have never played sports, but I don't mind my tax dollars being used so that a kid whose parents don't make much money can play on the same teams the "rich" kids play on. I know we are living in tough economic times, and I know that we are making cuts. But this is why I am willing to make some sacrifices so that these kids have the same opportunities as everyone else. Give these kids something to do after school that they enjoy. Many go home to terrible lives and need something to look forward to. I don't want to see that taken from them.
