New Study Turns Up the Heat on Soot's Role in Himalayan Warming

Dec 15, 2009 | Posted by: The Truth Matters | Full story: www.nasa.gov

A new modeling study from NASA confirms that tiny air pollution particles we commonly call soot – also known as black carbon – travel along wind currents from densely populated south Asian cities and accumulate over a climate hotspot called the Tibetan Plateau.

In fact, the new research, by NASA’s William Lau and collaborators, reinforces with detailed numerical analysis what earlier studies suggest: that soot and dust contribute as much (or more) to atmospheric warming in the Himalayas as greenhouse gases. He has produced new evidence suggesting that an “elevated heat pump” process is fueling the loss of ice, driven by airborne dust and soot particles absorbing the sun’s heat and warming the local atmosphere and land surface.

Lau explored the causes of rapid melting, which occurs primarily in the western Tibetan Plateau, beginning each year in April and extending through early fall. The brisk melting coincides with the time when concentrations of aerosols like soot and dust transported from places like India and Nepal are most dense in the atmosphere.

If all coal-fired electricity power generating
Asian/India plants had Frederick Gardner Cottrell
electrostatic particulate precipitators already
installed in all tall stacks in European, American
Australian, Soutth African by the mid 1920's,
and through the 30's, 40's, 50's, including metal smelters chimneys, as cheap coal was the main
combustible fuel source, including train steam locomotives, as oil was War rationed because of gasoline, and Military petrochemicals {vehicle tires contain as much as 20 % oil for flexibili-
ty..}, plastics, munitions, apparel fibers,..there should NOT be any black soot in the air! Dusts are always present in the atmosphere! That is why the sunsets, appear orange as the oblique light rays, scatter the red/yellow wavelengths, and absorb the blue, and violet!
My God New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. 1930's pedestrians would have been covered in black soot had these Cottrell particulate precipitators not been installed, in both power plants, and metal smelters! The health hazards of fine soot particles, let alone white Summer fashionable clothing apparels soiling was enough to invent all kinds of mitigating engineer
designs development based on the Bureau of mines inventor employer Gardner Cottrell in I think 1912, and beyond!! The main cause of air pollution in Asia/India is from the high molecular weight
combustion chamber lubricating oil fumes, remaining unburnt, and passing by worn out oil control rings/upper cylinder wear, malfunctioning PCV smog equipment, out of tail pipes, from older cars, trucks, buses, diesel trains, etc.. That
was the main reason for the 2009 European, and U.S. cash-for-clunkers program which removed, in exchange for newer high mpg. vehicles, about 2 million units from traffic! Just remember how clear the 2008 Beijing China Summer Olympics
sky was, when virtually all vehicular traffic, except for emergency, and athletes/visitors
was, as many U.S. Olympians feared pollution
wearing face masks, but once arriving in Beijing
did not need them, for the 3 weeks Games duration, with light rains also helping to clear the air!!
So NASA think about the above please!

As our fragile and delicate planet continues to deteriorate we see more and more chaos as food shortages continue, seas continue to rise inland, riots, unbearable heat and drought and floods, we can take solace in the realization the we humans are the cause of…..……wait, none of this has happened and it’s been 23 years! Why would I wish for this misery? Wouldn’t real environmentalists be happy about climate gate’s smoking icebergs?
Time’s up. Emergency over.

Yes there may be more dust aerosols in the air, as more and more high folliaged Rainforest deforestation over the past 50 years in all Asia, India, and environs no longer filtering now denuded eroding dusty soils! But colloidial dust particles are always present, That is what makes the sunsets appear orange-red!
Now if coal fired electricity Asian, Indian, and environs power plants don't have the Cottrell
tall stack electrostatic particulates precipitators
already installed in Europe, American, Australian, and South African by the early 1920's, refined
through the War years as oil was rationed, for both gasoline, and Military/ civilian petrochemicals, and cheap coal was the main fossil source for all energy needs, including coal tar derivatives, there should NOT be any black/brown
soot partcles from either power plants, nor metal smelters in that part of the World!!
The main air pollution haze comes from vehicular
unburnt high molecular weight engine lubricating oil fumes bypassing worn oil control rings, worn upper cylinders, and malfunctioning PCV/ anti smog equipments in older vehicles! Reason for 2009 European/U.S.A. cash-for-clunkers programs which took about 2 million smoke belching vehicles from the roads, in exchange for new high mileage vehicles, while old ones were ordered destroyed !! So NASA look for the above Cottrell stack precipitators, and also SO2's, NO2's chemical
neutralizers for retrofitting in Asia, just as they are, or should be installed, maintained
in the U.S.A. and Europe/Australia!!

Thank you selfish 'clueless' icon judges! With my reputation as a problem solver, it just shows you
how frustrating it is for this generation to even understand why some people even bother to analyze
a problem! It took a lot of concentration to write these 2 posts, which I think are right on point
in many aspects, which most of you never even thought about in terms of historic inventions such
as the ubiquitous Cottrell electrostatic particulate precipitator, and the co-joint use of lean-burning coal, oil, natural gas combustion conditions such as more air to fuel ratio to convert as much of the fuel to carbon dioxide{CO2}
and water {H2O} before being released to the atmosphere!
Some of you never even bothered to look at the
inside of your rear automobile tailpipe! Well if
it's clean at any stage of a modern car, SUV, utility truck life to about 90,000 miles your vehicle engine is in good running condition,
and the upper cylinder wear is so minimal that catalytic converter/oxygen sensors are still able to convert any unburnt PCV recirculated oil fumes to CO2 and water! But if its a sooty BLACK color, enough to soil your finger black at any stage
of the vehicle's age, assuming it has all the mandated factory smog abatement devices, then your engine is running rich with unburnt 8 carbon gasoline residues with no oil soot ash! Now if
your new vehicle engine approaches 50,000 miles,
and this rich-running condition had not been fixed at the garage, or even under the new car smog devices warranty which usually lasts for a 100,000 miles, and your State/Country does not have mandated by-yearly smog check we are all polluting the air with colloidial size soot particles so fine they are hardly visible except in a shaft
of light!!
Most of you figure that the cash-for-clunkers
2009 programs here in July/August, and in Europe around the beginning of the year, January/February 2009 in exchange for new high mpg. cars were to rejuvenate slumping auto-sales because of the
recession, and the U.S. giving rescue monies to G.M. and Chrysler! Well you'd be wrong my friends! For the simple reason that in late 2008, and very early 2009 in Europe the recession had not yet claimed dropping potential auto sales. So the cash-for-clunkers U.S.A. Summer program had dual benefits..cleaner air.. more new car sales, both domestic, and foreign!!

Now the big elephant in the room is whether this latest NASA model of heated black soot/dust aerosols holding back heat over the Himalayas for example, and prematurely melting ices, is VALID,in soundness of arguments; and in the mutually inclusive Scientific TRUTH conforming to facts, and reality! Does this mechanism overwhelm the endothermic {heat absorbing}, and concurrent carbon dioxide cellulose photosynthesis trees building blocks, and the concurrent oxygen emissions, and cooling water vapor photosynthesis
byproducts, severely attenuated by the loss of ~35
percent. of Asian/India Rainforests in the regions, causing less man-kind fuel combustion heats absorbtions, and Solar 10 % Earth absorbed
heat flux, during the 12 hours daylight cycle, and mostly released during clear 12 hours night cycle in that region, releasing 90 percent of the poor conductor atmospheric temporarily held enthalpic heat out to vacuum -150 F Space??
It's no shame to analyze that part of the conundrum! But good leaders can accept both the pollution mitigations above, and the NASA aerosols heating model; albeit it will take another Century for all this Reforestation to mature, while coal power plants tall stacks engineering retrofits are almost relatively immediate; while exchanging old cars, buses, trucks for new ones will take longer in those densely congested Orient cities and towns!

Don't you know that the Asian power plants and factories do NOT have any of the particulate scrubbers that the USA has adopted? Meanwhile, much of the household cooking is done over wood, coal and animal dung fires which produce much more in the way of black carbon particulates because of their vast numbers. Add to that the burning of forests in SE Asia and you have your major sources of the black carbon in the Himalayan region. SE Asian vehicles do add to the black carbon emissions but, it is no where near the amount generated by the other sources.

Thanks for your comments "The Truth Matters" #7"
"Don't you know that the Asian power plants and factories do NOT have any of the particulate scrubbers that the U.S.A. has adpoted?.."
I think if you read my #1 post, I think that you are partly preaching to my choir on that point, albeit; and please don't argue with me on this point, for as a practicing Indutrial Research Chemist, who knows that practically all our organic, and inorganic fabric, paper, wood...colorants come from China, India, Taiwan, and Japan;as well as a myriad of components for
the IT assemblies, and entertainment finished goods, including South Korea; so intuitively that means all these Orient countries personnel, Chemical Engineeers, with many U.S.A Fortune 100 consultants living there as both R&D scale-ups
supervision, assisted by QA {Quality Assurance}/
U.S.A. compliance/EPA/OSHA regulations; and air/water conveyance safety parameters, I doubt that what you are implying is entirely true, when it comes to excessive Industrial soots, and power plant stacks not being properly equipped, albeit probably not as well MAINTAINED as ours, or the other Industrialized nations mentioned in my above posts! I grant you that some older coal plants, and metal smelters/fundries may not have the state-of-the-art equipment, but that is the purpose of me replying this Topix forum, from their side of the fence, and judging by the conscentious quality of raw materials coming in to distributors, and used by me for the last 16 years, and having the
equivalent U.S.A. made products as a reference, since about 1968!!
But the salient point "The Truth Matters" is that regardless of the NASA latest 'theory' executive leaders, see the 'big picture' and being smart people, will understand what I mean by my conclusive/inclusive proactive remedial pragmatic phylosophy #6 post; once they also read my earlier #1,#3,#5,#6, and my 4 for Consideration 2009 December Copenhagen Denmark "Energy Conservation/
Regional GW {Desertification} and Regional GC {more earlier snows where we don't need}'Talking Points' outlined since February 2009, with the fourth having to do with retrofitting older Asian congested cities vehicles with latest smog devices.. implemented in Europe/U.S.A. as the cash-for-clunkers programs !!
The Beijing China 2008 Clear Blue Sky Summer Olympics 3 weeks "no vehicular traffic mandate" was mentioned in late 2008 Topix threads!
