Sept.18, 2009 - Visited Botany Bay Plantation during our stay in Edisto Beach. The woman who greeted us was informative regarding the history, the variety of trees, the wildlife, the cotton plantation and the hunts. The road leading to the entrance of Botany Bay was phenominal and lined with live oaks with arched branches as a canapy transcending us back to a more simple time. The walk to the beach was tranquil wiith tiny crabs scurrying about. The beach was enchanting and the palm trees and foilage made us feel like we were in the Pirates of the Caribbean. We also saw a Loggerhead hatching area. We will definitely return. The information sheet provided was great but more factual info would have been even better; for example, who is Mrs. Pepper who saved the oak tree. Keep up the great work in preserving this area!

Why isn't a calendar posted showing the many, many
many days that Botany Bay will be closed this fall
for deer hunting?

I visited Botany Bay preserve in October. In regard to rattlesnakes, they populate the state at large so you always have to be aware of your surroundings. I enjoy the wildlife and have a great respect for any reptiles that I encounter. No big whoop. The preservation area is nothing less than outstanding and glad that we can all enjoy it now rather than the elite few. My hat is off to the A.C.E. Basin Project as well by opening up over 6,000 acres to the public over the last few years. Not sure I agree with the hunting as there are plenty of places already to hunt dear in the state. Enjoy your state and lands.

SC Scenic highway 174 was named this week by the Federal Department of Transportation as a National Scenic Byway from the McKinley Washington Bridge to Palmetto Blvd. The effort was led by the Edisto Island Open Land Trust. This is a major step forward for the tourism economy and for efforts to preserve Edisto's rural scenic beauty. Much of SC's tourism industry is built upon our natural beauty and preserving the resource is critical to preserving the economy.

I have heard there are a lot of rattlesnakes along that area and the beach is more like muck or super saturated clay. the view is not worth the effort.
