As important as they are we have to take a very hard look at the sports programs in our Schools. All of these programs are available to the children outside of the schools, and most take advantage of them outside now. With money so tight perhaps it should be up to the parents to fully fund their childrens hobbies.
Sports aren't just hobbies, they're character builders and teach valuable life lessons to young people. The parents already pay for their kids to play High School sports, and to eliminate these programs is the beginning of the end for many kids. For some the teams are the only real families they have, and to take that away would be disasterous.

As a school employee I am also upset by the half empty school buses arriving at school in the mornings and leaving in the afternoon. BUT what people have to understand, every student in the district is assigned a seat on a school bus. If a parent chooses to drive their child to and from school, or they allow their child to drive to school, the bus company still has to have a seat on the bus for the student. You the people of the towns voted to build new schools and close the buildings in town where MANY students had walked to school. How did you think your kids would get to the new schools? Obviously they need to be bussed!!! Then you complain about paying for the buses. You made this situation, now stop wasting gas, put your kids on the bus!!!

On the contrary, STOP using the Busses and START driving your kids to school. Eliminate the busses for a while until the budget problems get fixed.

What about the contract with the bus company? When I sign a contract I am giving my word that I will agree. My reputation is on the line that my word means something. The same applies to my school distinct. Their word (which represents the community) means something, too.

Then what about the contract the state had with the district? If the state doesn't honor it's contract with the district, how can the bus company expect the district to honor its contract with them.

They are two separate contracts. You can't break a contract with one person because somebody else did the same thing to you.

What they should do is talk to the bus company and see if they are willing to renegotiate. If the say no, tell them that when the contact comes to the end, they may not get a new one.

Did you not read all the posts? The bus company DID renegotiate. They were very gracious and very helpful in this difficult time and did so on their own! The Massini's deserve big thanks for that. The district thanked them several times publicly but that never made it into the story that appeared.

Well that is a good thing... But my comments were about breaking a contract becuase someone unrelated to that contract broke another contract with first party.
