Here is an excerpt from the Herald-News. It seems that the city hiring freeze is ok, until something comes up. It seems that a fireman is going to be off work for awhile, and we all can assume that he is going to remain in a paid status? OWCP claim or what? In any event, Chief Suttles seems to think that it will be impossible to paint a bunch of fire hydrants IF the council doesn't replace the worker. Is Suttles going to paint and chance getting that white shirt dirty? See folks, another example of why Bob Vincent needs to enjoy this now because in a matter of months he will face opposition. I swear, I will PAY someone to run against the insurance draining sickly smurf. Oh, so much for volunteers, right?

... At Monday’s meeting, Dayton Fire Chief Chuck Suttles explained a dilemma with the hiring and replacement freeze in his department. One of his men will be absent from work for several weeks due to health issues, but because of the terms of the freeze, he was unable to hire a replacement.
“I wouldn’t be here asking, if it wasn’t under urgent circumstances,” Suttles said Monday.
Suttles said the fire department had a large amount of work planned starting Jan. 1, including painting and testing 425 fire hydrants, testing four trucks, and 10,400-feet of hose. Because the department will be short a man, he said the work would be next to impossible to accomplish...

The fire department is already under staffed. With an opening for another person caused by a termination of firefighter last month. In the last three months, they have had three openings due to, two firefighters quitting because of disagreements and one termination. Only two have been hired as replacements. The first hired through normal means of testing and interviewing. The second hired through [the same old way, who you know] Third was to be hired though application and testing, But now the FREEZE comes from no where. The money for the third should have already been in the budget.

Are you serious same o same o? I wonder why the ONLY REAL news source in Rhea County didn't report that? I didn't know this and I bet a lot of other Dayton citizens didn't know either. It sure would be nice if RheaCountyNewspaper.COM would not have been illegally shut down because I can say with certainty it would have gotten out for everyone to know. I guess we could chalk that one up as another "i told ya so". Some people still do not want to believe that the budget is not being handled well.

I am not saying that the budget is being mishandled or not. I would just think that EMERGENCY SERVICES [police and fire] should be the LAST to be effected by any short comings of funds.

Asking if Suttles has 2 broken arms, was that sarcastic? How is it that the fire dept. can't get any of those jobs done with out hiring 1 more person? Will one person make that much of a difference doing them jobs?

I agree with same o same o about the emergency services being the last to be effected.

I know Chuck very well and he is a really good man. I can assure you guys he has the best interests of Dayton in mind. Ask anyone who knows him and I'm sure they will tell you the same thing. He is doing his best to improve a department that was run down for a very long time. He has a long road ahead of him.

I do agree. Chuck can only do what the city will allow. You hire a fire chief to run the dept. But the city [lords] run the dept. Not the people that know the fire service. Chuck is a good man. Let him do his job. It is up to the city to figure out how to pay for it. Besides the city allowed the old chief to get them where they were. For so long.

Can I ask a question? Does the mayor have the right to call for a hiring freeze? Does he have more power than the other commissioners? Should this call be made by the city manager or city recorder? Has anyone heard of any rumors that the commission got into a free for all at one of the meetings? To reply to same o same o I believe not only does the fire chief need to run the fire department but the city manager and city recorder needs to run the city. Has the city not been in great shape until mayor Vincent? When my insurance for my home and business goes up then Mr. Mayor why did you not let the fire chief do his job to lower the rating. You can spend money on everything but what is really needed to run the city. This does not include a 6 million auditorium so you can put your name on a plaque. Or sewer lines to the vice mayors house for maybe 3 houses. Paving a whole subdivision.Christmas parties in cleveland at your country club. Hmmm! The list goes on and on. My opinion

I think that as long as I have checks I have money.lol Whats wrong with subcontracting some of the work that the city needs done.Oh I forgot they will probably give the work to the Mayor's nephew.I know people that would paint fire hydrants for $8.00 an hour.

If the (POWERSTHATBE)would quit taking money into there own pockets they could get the work done and help people!! My girl and I were sitting at point park, I noticed a hardwood tree had been down at the boat ramp for sometime. I ask her why they couldn't give it to someone that burns wood for heat? Well I anwsered my own question, and its a shame!! They could give everyone an equal opportunity somehow,They could get this work done for free.

subcontracting government work,,is whats wrong in America ,, from Federal[war in Iraq]to state tractors mowing dirt beside rd. this time of year,,county buying gravel as far away as possible,,[dump truck bill],,if the city contracted painting fire hyd,,they would get painted every day non stop..subcontracting work is the root of all government corruption..it started under reagan,,today has taken over america,,look at all the illegals runing tractors mowing for 6 dollar hour,,tractor owner get over 100 hr,your tax dollars..dont you know there is a hell of a kick back in there some where,,and thats just one example..

hillbilly....Yes I agree subcontracting does open the door for corruption. There is a rite way to do anything. There is more than one way to do things the rite way. If they keep all the cards on the table for all to see it makes it hard to cheat. I run off tip boards for charity, however myself and my family can't play. If they had you, wolfeagle, and myself watching the game it would make it hard to cheat.First thing they need to do is take all the doors off there offices so they can,t hide.......

yes then they would pick the sub, contractor, and have dinner with them on the week end and get there cut,,the only way is by doing the work with county equipment, with people on county pay roll,,thats the only way,and should be done from Federal to local government, hell the army cooked its own meals for 200 years, now it said to cost around 200 a meal per man in iraq..it total eat up our government,,to the point rich man puts up money for campaign,he knows once his man is elected he will make millions,,it needs stoped..but will not be,,until the fall over usa..read Soviet union history..

I don't have a problem with the pay of fire fighters or how many is needed, these men and women put their lives on the line for strangers. I wouldn't have the balls for that job, then again I'm a girl. My beef is with the budget and the hiring freeze. Are these people idiots? They should have cracked down on the frivolous spending along time ago. I've said things before about the big firetruck being used for fetching breakfast, lunch and diner, along with personal errons. In the wonderful paper of the hear-old news there is an article about the county cracking down on credit card usage. Now why hasn't this crack down on everything been priority long before now? Now as far as the work that needs done in the fire dept. I have a few ideas about that. For one, I notice quite often that their are a few firefighters sitting around in lawn chair during the summer, why can't they be using the pick-up truck to go around painting fire hydrants then, or checking the hoses, it just takes a little bit of work everyday to complete the job. Second, they could have volunteers do some painting on the weekends...... or us workers from the jail to do painting everyday. There are answers to this dilemma, just look outside the box, use an open mind.
