Herbie wasn't a bad guy, but, this accident was bound to happen sooner or later. I am just glad the other guy was not seriously hurt

I don't know who the above person is who posted such an ignorant comment about the accident happening sooner or later. I happen to have been Herbert's sister-in-law, and NO..Herbert was NOT a bad person...he had a heart of gold....too bad they obviously never knew that. Maybe if the State of Vermont did their job and responded to even one of the many calls made that Herbert needed help, this accident could have easily been prevented. We miss him terribly and will never let anyone forget him.

looks like the driver that crossed the line and hit the other car head on is at fault not the state, seems he was the driver, so how is it you can blame the state?

I have known Hebie for 20 years, I did not say he was a bad person, I said he wasn't a bad person. He did have a heart of gold,(obviouly you can not read) but, he had many problems, I knew Herbie very well and saw the way he lived his life, It was bound to happen. I am not ignorant. You say if Vermont did it's job...ummm Where was his family when he needed help? Rodney did very little to help his son, Where were the rest of you? Where was his family when he was living in the woods? homeless. Many people tried to help him, but it's hard to help people who won't let you. I liked Herbie. The rescue squad responded to his calls for help, many times..Yes, the state could have done more... but so could the people who say they loved him.

Of course you don't know me, do you know anyone from the area he lived in? How many times did you go to Hancock or Granville to visit him?
I said "He was not a bad person" and I meant it. I have know Herbie for 20 years. You said if the state did there job...ummm at least they made sure he had a roof over his head and food in his stomach, Herbie had a lot of problems, you think the state is responsible, where were the people who say they loved him? where were they when he was living in the woods? homeless. The state did responde to many calls, many! Where was his family? Rodney took off to Florida every winter, Herbies had only his friends to help him. Caine tried to disable his car. William tried many times to help him. Peter was very kind to him, but there is only so much people can do. Yes, the state could have done more, but so could the people who say they loved him. That accident was bound to happen, noone who knew him was surprised, saddened but not surprised,do you know there were no brake marks from his car?...NONE, he never hit the brakes.

I respect your comment, but you obviously did not know Herbert and why the State IS involved. There is much more to this than him just crossing the line.

well..let me start by saying it is YOU who cannot read. If you look at my first comment, it is written in perfect english. I never said that you said Herbert was a bad guy. We know he had many problems....we saw Herbert several times just in the last 2 years in Vermont and we were well aware of his many problems-some which I wil not get into on this site because it's no one's business. We DO realize all of the people there in town that tried to help him...it is not them that we are upset with. To all of you-we are SO grateful for EVERYTHING you did for Herbert. He always spoke so highly of all of his friends. Although I don't owe you an explanation, we tried on numerous occasions to bring Herbert to Florida, to live with us until he got on solid ground....but he would never think of it. You are right in that it is hard to help someone who simply won't let you. He would never leave Vermont becasue his father was there. As for Rodney, don't get me started...that's a whole despicable story in itself. When Herbert was here in Florida for all of those weeks, we had him convinced to spend the winters with us and then the summers there. We were thrilled that he actually accepted our offer to come to Florida, and then everything fell apart. Contrary to what many may think, we were very much in touch with Herbert. What we are upset about is that many calls were made for almost 2 weeks to have him picked up, and his condition worsened, and nothing was done. That is what I meant about the State not doing their job. Paul was trying to figure out who you were, I'm sure you probably knew each other.

Typical liberal mentality. The State should have done more. No responsibility, no personal accountability. The State is already invovled TOO much.
Sorry for the loss of your friend.

I do not think I know Paul...just Herbie and Rodney, I was married to Herbies landlord for a very long time, Rodney always called me "a peach". I had no disputes with him, however, I did not agree with how he treated his son. Herbie will be missed, may he rest in peace.

for your information...I'm not a liberal That's what's wrong with our country...too much leniency. Unless you knew Herbert and the WHOLE story, your comment is void. The state is NOT involved enough when it comes to situations like this. Nothing can ever bring back my brother-in-law, but maybe this pain can be avoided in someone else's life.

This is to Christine W. You know nothing about my son. You might have said hi to him but you NEVER knew him. If u did know him you would never have made the comments you did. It is really sad for someone to go on a computer and spew lies about someone that has passed. I am more then willing to tell you facts to back what i say up that will make you feel like a moron!

Whatever! The truth is hard for some people to hear. Nothing I said was a lie, nothing. He used to sit in my front yard to watch the fire works, I was one of the people who used to give him a ride when he was walking. I knew Herbie, he never mentioned his mother, even when he was living in the woods, behind my mother-in-laws house or when he was renting a house from my husband. I saw him everyday, in the deli and in Hubbards. Herbie was a nice guy, and he will be missed!
