I live in Maine and I'm getting older (70) and need to be somewhere where there is no snow to shovel or plow. Plus a 6,000 oil bill every year. I'm looking for a place that is safe for an elderly woman renting a house, and, since I swim, a good pool that is friendly to the elderly. I like to swim laps but I don't want to be driven out by the young men who are always so aggressive. Is the YMCA pool friendly for lap swimmers if you are old? anyone here swim there? And I see there is a very high theft rate in Grants Pass. I can leave my door open here 24/7 but I guess that's out there. Is living a little outside of town safe?

Dear Lady, I specialized in the elderly and terminally ill here in GP for 20 years before I retired. I am a 4th generation local. The place is set up for the elderly, nice climate, great YMCA. Medical care is good here too. Medford has some of the best Dr.s on the west coast. However, in the past few years, the methamphetamine and heroin trade have abounded due to the influx of illegals from AZ and CA. They use the I-5 as a trade route. The cartels also have a hold in the mountains with opium and pot crops guarded by armed illegals. There are news articles about this stuff online. Also, the sheriff's budget did not pass, so just last week they announced on the noon news how county folk will haveto lock and load and know when to shoot. Right now is a VERY bad time. The jail just released 40 inmates on Wed, some sex offenders, robbers, ect. and on Thurs the paper said many had not reported to parole/probation..so they are loose and on the run around here now somewhere. Meth heads are running abundant, shootings, increased gang activity (mostly hispanic from California). I no longer feel safe for the night strolls through the beautiful parks, no longer can leave house or car unlocked, and you better have some sort of security. My 84 yr old mother just last week had a man try to come to her house to "award her a Safeway gift". We stopped him and it was no Safeway that sent him. Most likely he was going to "case" her house and rob it later, or just take her and her car and credit cards at gunpoint and they will find the body, car and the credit card trail later. That has already happened about 10 years ago to an 86 yr old lady here. Taken right off the street downtown. Not trying to scare you away, but being honest. I am trying to get my mom to move with me to a safer, more stable state, but her roots are here and I feel I must stay to help and protect her during the rest of her time. Not letting her end up a victim or in some nursing home. But if you have the money to sit behind security, a good car that won't let you down on the road, live where you get cell phone activity, and watch who you hire or hang with, you can enjoy it as a Sr. just fine. Not much shopping but only 4-5 hours from Portland and just 8 hours drive from San Fransisco. Oh and the Redwoods and beaches are definitely something worth seeing at least once in your lifetime. Quite the spiritual energy booster in those Redwoods.

Wanted to add, there are plenty of people here who can build you a solar, wind, or water energy source, since you would like little to no energy bills.:)
