I have a problem. I love French Onion soup, but the after effects are not good. I suffer from extremely rotten smelling gas for about a day afterward. Bad enough that my wife gets very upset. Does French Onion soup do this to anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can still eat the soup but not pass such rancid gas afterward?

do you know that if a dog eats too many onions it can kill them? I know of someone who also loves this soup, I will ask them and get back to you later.

I have the same problem with powdered onion soup such as Lipton's.

It has progressed from horrible gas to explosive diarrhea. I can't explain it. It happens consistently with onion soup but not with any other foods.

I would love to hear a scientific explanation.

These problems seem like they should be solved by a licensed fartologist if you ask me.

Certain foods like garlic and onions- which taste really good- contain various sulfur compounds, that, when digested, convert to noxious-smelling gasses like hydrogen sulfide. Wish I could help you out with that, but I'm getting ready to enjoy the after-effects of my brats, onions and saurkraut.

(Sorry that's what happens when you have a chemist geek roving the forum.)

When you're in bed with the little lady have you tried farting under the covers and then pulling them over her head so she will absorb the fumes?

Foul smelling gas is a result of not enough friendly bacteria in your gut and is lack of enzymes to break down the food particles. Get your self a good enteric coated probiotic and a complete enzyme, such as pancreatin, from yur local health food store, not garbage from a pharmacy, take one probiotic per day and two enzymes with all cooked meals, you will never have this gas again! Plus, you will not have the heartburn that so many americans experience as a result of eating processed, dead foods;-( Hope this helps!

Try going the other way and see how bad it can really get.

Have a Stroh's beer with your onion soup.

i actually did the #11 king size with rings tonight around 8:15. I was seriously hoping for decent crop dusting tonight at work, but sadly the gas did not start until after 1:00 am, and the smell (which brought tears to my eyes)showed up about 15 minutes after that. Tomorrow I plan on having the same thing to eat prior to the start of second shift and that should provide a very odoriferous evening for my line operators.
