Macy's presents 'Elf' show redux

Full story: TwinCities.com

When the Macy's holiday auditorium display opens Saturday - more than a week later than in past years - the theme, "A Day in the Life of an Elf at Macy's Santaland," might seem familiar.

Last year's display was hardly worth the time and trip downtown to see it - not as intersting or as long as previous years' displays. I was trying to decide whether to take my 5 year old niece again this year - thanks for making the choice easy Macy's - now I can take her to MOA instead!

It matters not to me if the display is the same..it is FREE and that is good enough for me and my 5 year old daughter. She loves the display and attends every year. We are doing Breakfast with Santa there again this year and will see the display after the breakfast. We go through the display and then get a gingerbread man after getting our picture with Santa. It is a tradition and we would'nt miss it. Thanks for all you do for the community Macys. You could easily have given up on this MN tradition when you took over and you didnt. Many appreciate it. Thanks again!

My niece and nephew have gone ever since they were babies. The continue to go even now in their 20's because it is tradition. This tradition in our family started with me and my mother taking me to Daytons, she started it my niece and nephew and when she passed very early in life I held the tradition for them in her honor. It is a tradition to get together with each other and remember fun times when we were young and what Christmas is about, being with family. I guess we can still do that without a visit to Macy's if this is how it will continue.

But with the change of the store to Macy's they most definiately are making it "their" store. It will not surprise me that this repeating of the story will be the catalyst for the corporation to say attendance is down and now we cannot do it anymore. Too much time and for too little revenue. So sad after over 45 years a twin cities tradition may be falling by the wayside.:(

Funny how the "mom in st paul" likes the display, but under her name it says Cincinatti Ohio is where the post comes from.
I remember when St Paul and Mpls. DAYTONS both had Christmas displays. I'll give Macy's a pass this year on copying last years display, because of the economy, expenses, etc. But mark my words, we will never see new original content in the macy's Christmas display again. We willnever have a store like Dayton's again. The style, the SERVICE, and the entire shopping experience.

Or where Macy's corporate offices are located. Wonder why her comment was so positive.

My family will be going again. The kids enjoy it more than I do. I just enjoy walking around the store looking at all the old portions of Dayton's that are still visable and just imagining what it may have been like at its prime.

So something that is free and meant to life your holiday spirit is not worth your time?

With how losey Federated Department Stores (owner of Macy's) is running, I'm suprised they didn't cancel the whole thing anyways.

I think it's great that they continue to offer such a magical experience for the children and families of the Midwest. I went last year and it was just fabulous. There are so many details to see and it sounds like there is more added this year. We should be Thankful this is available and still after all this time free to the public.

We will never have $1.00 gasoline either. We have become such an community of expectations and demands instead of appreciation. Shame on us.

There have been many rumors that Macy's is indeed closing this display next year. It's too bad since it is a great draw to the downtown area. Hopefully Minneapolis will wise up and create their own in a new location. Might also be a great opportunity for the MOA to have their own show and keep people coming to The Mall instead of heading downtown.

Daily Horoscope for January 8

Leo

Why are you still fighting, Leo? Everyone else went home a long time ago, but you're still here pounding your fists on the table. Although you don't want to admit it, accepting defeat may be your most practical option at this point. Sometimes it's just easier to move on than to keep up the fight. When you're forced to restructure, at least you have a chance to redefine. YouÕl get the opportunity to start with a clean slate, so use it to your advantage.
