Grand Haven culling deer at cemetery

The USDA wasn't involved in this at all. Man, you 8 people have got to be the stupidest TV people of all time ... and that says a lot!!!

The city is lying through their teeth. Residents were on their property around the cemetery and were not notified the shooting would take place. Bullets flew within 20 yards of them. Lawsuit time. The mayor when called told the residents it was not the city and he knew nothing about it. If his assistant city manager doesn't inform him, things are worse than we all thought. John Naser will be buried in the next election.

The city manager said the USDA was involved. Do you have personal knowledge that the department was not?

"They were here first" might be the dumbest thing I've read today. Where are their natural predators? What about all the feeding plots that are now available that weren't available before? Maybe you should move if they were here first. GETACLUE

what a great idea! 550 pounds of meat for the local charities--that can feed quite a few people, and aren't people more important than animals?

Our tax payers money have to pay for these sharp shooters. So why not let bowhunters buy a licence to hunt them. Which would put money into the state and not be taking more away.

This makes me so mad! I live in Grand Haven and we've enjoyed drives through the cemetary and walks in the woods just to look at the dear. They are beautiful! I don't think they deserve to be killed. It's not like there are deer everywhere you go in the city. They are in the woods! that's where they belong.

I also don't agree with the fact that the citizens in the area were not notified! I think it's wonderful that the ladies protested! Good for you!!!!

It's sad that just because there are a few deer spotted and because people drive too fast throughout the city that the poor deer have to loose their lives for this. If people would just slow down on the roads then it would be fine. They are part of the world and scenery in GH. Get over it and have a heart! It's so maddening!

Yeah you're right. I mean, if we were to lower the speed limit to 25 on all of the Michigan roads, wow, we would eliminate so many car-deer accidents. Good thinking.. I would much rather have hunters thin the population during deer season than pay $5k on getting my car fixed because a deer decided to jump out in front of my car.

I am a member of PETA...People For Eating Tastey Animals. You need a good management system to keep a healthy herd, the herd numbered 54 deer earler this year. Now think about if a majority of these deer are Doe, and they have been breed by a buck, a doe will often drop twins. So if nothing is done, you have an out of control and un-healthy population, this is where the diseases start to come into play. Would you rather see the deer walking around with a disease like CWD that mimics Mad Cow and the animals just waste away. This crap happens when there are too many in one spot competeing for food. So those of you who think they should be left alone are the ones who should be ashamed as you would rather see the deer suffer and starve and die a horrible disease ridden death. They are donating the meat to a worthy cause for those who can't afford to live in your little upscale area of Grand Haven. Quit hugging the damn trees and come back to earth and reality.

Why doesnt the state of Michigan just allow deer hunters to bait for the deer during regular season times. The DNR wonders why deer populations are down and the number of hunting tags that were filled are down. Before the DNR changed the baiting rule the number of deer harvested was quite high. Its common sense.

The DNR wanted a reason to end the baiting and they got their wish when a deer in an enclosed pen, nowhere near another wild deer got CWD. They seem to think it will spread beyond the enclosed pen where only the 1 deer had it and no others. Rumor has it the deer in question may not have even had CWD and the DNR used it as an excuse.

Pretty disgusting to kill the deer on sacred ground. Glad none of my relatives are buried there.
