In Bird-in-Hand, witnessing Pa. Amish firsthand

Full story: Evening Sun

A family's worth of laundry, in somber shades of black and blue and gray, is neatly pinned to a high-flying clothesline that runs between the barn and the farmhouse.

Go to New Holland auction any Monday and just watch them talking on their cell phones while watching their beat up, broken down, bloody horses being sold to slaughter buyers. What about keeping TV's hidden until very early morning then plugging them in, and all the other "electric" stuff they have. It's such a crock, they only "act" amish to avoid taxes. And I have NEVER seen a group of people take worse care of their animals. They don't give a crap about anything besides keeping up the act. I'm sure somewhere there's a few "real" ones left, but there's not many.

YOU ARE WRONG. I have volunteered at 2 different large animal rescues in the area and I have been witness to the complete and utter mercilessness that Amish feel toward animals. We would save draft horses and mules from auction(slaughter) that they brought there after whipping and beating them bloody. I would help nurse these poor creatures back to health and find them caring homes to live out the rest of their lives.
The horses you see on the road look fine until they are too sick or injured to do their job then they are nothing but a buck to the Amish who sell them for a horible slaughter death.
And don't get me started on the puppy mills. I'm sure God does not look kindly on the way the Amish treat HIS creatures.

Jill - Thank you for speaking up. I run a small private horse rescue in East Berlin, and we see the mess they cause every time we are at auction. And allowing the little children to beat the horses with whips, I mean it's never going to stop. Trotting horses day in and day out on blacktop, there's no wonder they are only sound for a short time. People always argue with me saying in the old days they ran them on the roads, but that was back when there wasn't blacktop. I was at the auction quite a few times when the horses didn't want to go into the ring and they would start hitting them and laughing, having a good ole time. Sounds like a great group of people to me......... Not to bring up the subject.. but that one Amish guy who shot, what was it, like 100 dogs, just because he was told he needed to shut down and find them homes or surrender them? It's just pathetic.

Amish pay as much, if not more than most of us in taxes. Yes, they absolutely do. They pay state taxes just like you and I, they pay privilege taxes, and they pay whopping school (real estate) and township taxes. They also pay into unemployment, federal, and all those other taxes on our paychecks. They are NOT exempt. But they do not use any of the benefits of these taxes. They do not use social security, medicare, ask for unemployment compensation, or send their children to the english schools. They do however, use the buses for transport, just like any other special interest group does,,ex- private religious schools, like catholic, jewish, protestant. My amish neighbor pays well over $12000, just for his july tax bill.

Animals i know nothing about- but this has gone around so many times about them not paying taxes---do you think anyone gets away with not paying taxes, nah just the real wealthy.

How many Amish are serving in the active duty Armed Forces today ?

Are any in the Guards or Reserves, working at home/farm and serving only one weekend per month, and a few weeks each summer ?
How many Amish are in the Guard or Reserves ?

How many have performed an overseas tour to a war zone in the past 20 years ??

The Amish are all about makin' a buck, same as everyone else...thus, allowing tours to their farms. And the diesel engine to run equipment to keep mild fresh. And the telephone booth at the END of their lane. They're laughing the whole way to the bank, and at the TOURISTAS who flock there. You better get up damn early to beat them.

They are also the some of the first people on the scene when a neighbor needs help, often going to places where hurricanes have brought havoc on communities.. They provide labor and food, and much needed help.

And making a buck, isn['t that what all of us are trying to do, well except for all the immigrants- who stay here virtually free, free food, housing, education, medical- now you're talking people who suck the life out of this country.

Some of them are using their own community to enrich themselves. Just consider the auctioneer at the New Holland sales stables this guy is just as authentic as a 3 dollar bill. He is good at making a fool out to the bidders, I know I have been had a few times by this fellow. He sheds a bad light on the Amish community there.

omg this reminds me, I work in Lancaster county and I have seen on several occasions amish and mexicans working together. As a matter of fact, I've seen an Amishman in full dress, smoking, talking on the phone and driving a pick up truck with the mexican flag all over it at the same time. Awesome! I love America!

The Amish pay no road taxes, and who does more damage to the roads other than Amish? Are you going to say big trucks? They pay for the roads, you should have to pay to license your buggies and little kids should not be allowed to drive any type of wagons. You should have to pay for a permit just like other teenage kids do to drive a car and then take a test to prove that you know the laws of the road. Pay for insurance, pay for the license, and a license to have permission to have that buggy on the road. Also, you do beat your horses, I've seen you doing it!

By the way what is an Amishman doing with a computer, I would think that would be a big sin, kind of worldly don't you think? Just like the camera phones, oh, don't take pictures of us, but you sure don't mind taking them of each other with your camera phone, hypocrites!

good for the Amish for not bowing to societies standards. they choose to live the way they do. good for them. they are many sects within the Amish community, all having moderation to their beliefs in regards to technology.

<quoted text>
They don't own cars because they prefer to keep their families close-knit,not everyone going their own way. They ride in cars to go places that aren't practical to get to in a buggy. Why do you hate them?I hate Kate(and Jon).

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Aries

There is minor evil around today, whether it is harsh words or actions. Relationships with non spiritual people will tend to be abrasive, as you come to understand that such people can never be trusted, for their agenda is not love. Beware of criticism from colleagues or friends. Avoid being narrow minded and confining your views to the conventional. You may want to argue with everyone and everything, but beware of devouring your own energy in the process.
