Red Bay Al.

I been to many big cities and smaal towns. in fact i was brougth up in a small town. and i been around the world, seen many things and done just about every thing. But if I had to do my life over agian RED BAY would be my home. it'sa wonerdful place to live. it may have it's problems just like any other small city or town. but the streets are clean and the homes are nice, most of all the people are very nice. It is a great place to rase kid's.thank god that there towns like this one. keep it going.

Humans arent meant to be happy. I have lived here a little over 40 years. Instead of looking at how good I have it, I find things to get stressed over. But I'd rather be stressed here than anywhere else Ive been =)

I have lived here 17 years...it sucks...many towns our size in population have MUCH more to do and MANY more places to shop.
Red Bay is a JOKE...I have lived in many small towns and even the big city...while Red Bay is not hell...its pretty much as close as you can get on earth!
I just hope the new mayor and council can make the changes we need before its too late. This town is on the way down unless we get more revenue and more jobs.

I live in Chicago, IL but all of my relatives are in the Red Bay area. My job takes me all over the country but I have to tell you that the people in Red Bay are some of the nicest I've ever met. I always look forward to visiting my family there and even though there is a limited entertainment venue, count your blessings that you do no have the crime and trouble of many of the busier cities. Red Bay is a great escape and I look forward to retiring there.

As I said...I have been ato and lived all over the country as well...as long as your visiting here...your ok...but once you choose to move here you see Red Bay for what it really is. As far as crime goes...there are many other areas just as safe as Red Bay...if you can call RB safe.

Its not just about things to do. This town is full of hypocrits, liars, thieves, and busybodies...and I know you will have that in every town; but Red bay is the worse by far that I have ever seen.

Guess it depends on what side of the tracks your from...

Red Bay is no different than any other small town. People are people where ever you go. My family's roots are deep in Franklin County and primarily Red Bay. I get a good feeling of "hominess" when I visit there. I feel like I'm related is some way to just about everyone who has lived there for a long time. It is like we are all family. And we all have members in our family who just don't do right. Fact is, none of us do right all of the time. I can't think of a thing that would keep one from moving from Red Bay if they truly don't like it there. Hell, Vina is only a few miles away. Go live there. Or, you could move across the border into Mississippi. I don't live in Alabama, but I have always loved my visits there and I love my family that lives there(even the weird ones).

i stumbled up on the comments about red bay & belmont
i was born in red bay we moved away when i was a child would come back and visit my grandmother . i throught red bay and belmont was such a hick place to live we moved back to red bay when i was a teenager i cried and dident want to live here but during this time i met a young man who later became my husband my family and me then moved to near chicago il my dad was temp laid off we came back to red bay i got married my husband and me moved to il and stayed a few yrs then decided we wanted to come back to red bay to have our kids i believe that was the best move we ever made we both worked to pay our bills as soon as we recieved our checks we made sure our bills were paid we did without a lot of luxeries our kids dident have name brand clothes but they had parents who loved and cared for them we gave our hearts to god raised our kids in church they went wheather they wanted to or not god has blessed us through the yrs we had hard times and bad times but god never let us down one son carries the gospel around the world the other son has a business of his own they never lived any where but red bay my sons has children none of them are on drugs or alchol and they are in church also a small town can seem boring but it is the best place to raise a family i have often wondered what our family would have been like had we stayed in a large city and had not given our heart and life to god believe me it is not always an easy road to be a christian but it is worth it god bless you

you are so right most folks here are nice and if you have trouble or need help there is always some one to lend a helping hand its nice to be able to drive down the road and someone throw up thier hand or nod at you i ran out of gas one day a young man called his mom and asked her to bring gas she did and i tried paying her she said no way would she take money i thanked her and told her what a nice young man her son was on another accasion i decided to walk to work because it was a beautful day wasent very far i had at least 4 people to stop to offer me a ride and ask if i had car trouble thats the way most folks around her are what a wonderful little town i wish for you much happiness

you see that anywhere! Like I said, I have lived in many places and I see that same thing everywhere. Its great you think its feels like family, its great you get all warm and fuzzy when you drive in the city limits...but I don't. Again, this is the worst town I have lived in. If you are from here or your "roots run deep" here then you are accepted plain and simple. Otherwise you're not. Plain and simple. I have met many people here in town who are not from Red Bay and when I am nice to them they are surprised...they say you must not be from here...that says it all!

I was born in Red Bay and visited many times as a child. Red Bay is a perfect example of small town supidity. Go wet! Bring new jobs in and new businesses. All the kids that stay run around looking for something to do, and that is normally DOPE.

The smart ones have to leave to support themselves and to get an education. My there is an idea, why not try to get a college to build and move to Red Bay. The churches have been running Red Bay for years, hows that working for you. If Red Bay continues down the same path, Who will feed those lazy preachers.

The number of unemployed county residents has nearly doubled since the same time last year.

Figures released by the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Friday shows the county unemployment rate at 12.5 percent. That is almost twice as much as the 2008 average of 6.7 percent. That number represents 1,622 unemployed county residents.

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees

announced Friday that Alabama's July unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent, up from June's rate of 10.1 percent. This figure represents 215,377 unemployed persons.

July's total nonagricultural wage and salary employment decreased by 12,900, with most

of the monthly downturn resulting from seasonal losses in the educational component of

local government. Other sectors experiencing losses were financial activities,

construction, information, and education and health services. Sectors experiencing

gains were leisure and hospitality, professional and business services and

manufacturing.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates were Shelby at 7.6 percent, Madison at 7.9 percent and Baldwin at 8.5 percent.

Counties with the highest unemployment rates were Wilcox at 24.9 percent, Dallas at 21.1 percent and Perry at 20 percent.

"Although we still experienced an increase in our unemployment rate, it's not nearly as

large a gain as we have been seeing this year, on a month-to-month basis," Surtees said.

"The important thing for unemployed Alabamians to remember is that there is help

available to them, and we at the Department of Industrial Relations are here to make sure

they receive all the benefits for which they qualify."

Last week, the Alabama legislature passed a law to add up to an additional 20 weeks of

emergency benefits for Alabama's unemployed. These federally funded benefits are

available to anyone who has exhausted all 59 weeks of their benefits on or after March

29. Claimants who are eligible for additional benefits will be notified in writing by DIR by Aug. 28 and given instructions on how to file for the benefits.

A Franklin County man drown Wednesday morning after his boat capsized during a fishing trip on Frazier Lake.

Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott said Joe Watkins, 49, of 34 Mountain Brook Road in Russellville, was fishing with his nephew when he reached to grab a jug out of the water. The weight shift caused the boat to capsize, forcing Watkins into the water.

Reports said Watkins' nephew tried to locate him quickly, but was unsuccessful.

The Tharptown Volunteer Fire Department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, the Franklin County Technical Response Dive Team, and Pleasant Bay Ambulance were dispatched to the scene around 10:24 a.m.

"We were dispatched out at 10:24 this morning," Tharptown Volunteer firefighter Janice Pennington said.

Pennington said members of the fire department immediately gained access to a boat and floated to the scene where the boat capsized. There was no sign of Watkins.

The Franklin Technical Response Dive Team called for help from the Colbert County Technical Response Dive Team for use of their equipment. Within minutes of being on the scene, Watkins' body was recovered and brought to the surface by divers.

Officials said Watkins was found in 9 and half feet of water near place the boat capsized.

Pennington said it was well known that Watkins could not swim, which caused him to drown after being tossed into the water.

"There was no sign of any trauma to the body," Coroner Elzie Malone said. "He just could not swim."

Frazier Lake is located off of County Road 48, near the Tharptown Community.
