Does anyone realize for how many DECADES --over half a century--we have been spending money to try to "help Appalachia"? Maybe we should just give every family money to move, and let the area go back to wilderness.

Yes, because simply moving them from one area to another will suddenly end their poverty. Idiot.

That's a really ignorant comment, goslipstream. I have the feeling you have never been to Appalachia, nor have met anyone who calls that area home.

Remember also that Appalachia has been impoverished through mining and other industries that have enriched folks in other parts of the country. A few decades of assistance hardly undoes the damage that has been done to the land. What America needs is a greater sense of interdependence. Appalachian values of family, faith, self-reliance, and rootedness in place are a priceless part of our common heritage as Americans. The same social forces that work against Appalachia today harm ordinary working people everywhere.

Not really (and your feeling is not correct). If the problem is that there is no way to maintain viable industries or vocations (ie farming) in that area because of the natural terrain and continued lack of resources, then why should the state keep trying to change that which can't be changed?

That has nothing to do with the people, it has to do with the locale, by the way. Does the person who called me an idiot thinks that appalachians are too stupid to make their way anywhere else?
