I am a resident of Kernville. I find it very sad and frustrating that with so many self-proclaimed wilderness "experts" running around our area, that a Highway Patrolman took it upon himself to go ahead and kill this poor elderly and disoriented animal. The photos of the cat in our local paper really drove the point home for me. Knee jerk reactions to everything seem to be the norm around here. This shows a complete lack of rational thinking on the part of local leaders and law enforcement. Utterly ridiculous !!!

Apparently sir you are not that familiar with the species nor to is killing ability. Even if caught probability factors would have the cat right back and on the prowl for none else but food, not disorientation.

I have a question for you people that find it a need to kill a wild animal that the only crime that it committed is that it wandered into town. Instead of trying to block the streets and letting the animal get back into the woods, you shoot first then ask questions, that is getting a little old... So I ask the question, who was here first? We are pushing them and just like the native americans how far?

I am a huge animal lover of all animals and believe that they should all be allowed thier space since we live in thier territory. They were here first. But I can not belive the people that shot off thier mouths about how bad it is to kill when they don't have all the facts. This animal was not just roaming the area. I live just up the street from where it was. It was starving and had a injured foot that was badly rotting and with that it could not hunt normaly. This cat had no other way but to pick easy pray. The house it was at has two small childred that were playing on the front porch. Easy food for a big cat. There was also a great dane dog in that yard and this cat was hugry enought to jump the fence and with the dog there. No cat in good health would take on a large dog. This cat was not just passing through it was hunting easy pray and starved enough to try to get pass this dog. It was a true threat and at that point I would have shot the cat as well no matter how I love the wildlife in my area. I moved here to see and enjoy our wild creatures. I put plants in my yard just for the deer to eat. and enjoy seeing bear and big cats in my neighborhood, even on my street, and I give the wildlife the space they need to pass by, but this cat could not hunt, was ill, starving, and a true treat to the safety of human life, even if you just let him pass he would have stayed in the area to hunt easy pray again, be it a child or a small pet in a fenced yard. There was no other choise to make. So befor you mouth off about haw bad the authorities or others are for killing animals. GET THE FULL AND CORRECT FACTS FIRST!!!
