How is the Glen Cove area? Is is safe? I'm interested in moving there...very soon. Hopefully before the new school year starts (I have children). Does anyone know anything about Stanley Park Houses on Janet Lane? I heard that Freeport is pretty dangerous....is it true? Thanks for your comments.

P.S. Please keep your negativity and rude comments to yourself.

Anything that ends in "houses" is not a good area. Glen Cove is full of wanna be gang bangers and spoiled rich kids. The school sucks and is full of thugs. Besides all that, its great.

It's two family houses...it's a community not apartment buildings. But thank you for your reply, I will put that into consideration when deciding on schools....by the way, which school are you referring to?

This is sadly, true. Don't send your kids to the Glen cove schools, if you can help it. Good luck to you.

The middle school and High school. the grade scholls are okay. Glen Cove is surely going down the tubes. Ans stay away from Janet Lane and Lee Gray court. Bad areas!

I went through the GC school district in the 80's. At that time, it was ok, not great. There was a lot of bullying and a lot of violence (fights, etc). Most of what you got out of it was what you put into it first - there was a lack of support to kids who didn't have college-minded parents (and there are plenty of affluent landscapers & carpenters in GC) so if you were a typical kid with a lack of direction, it was harder than what I see now in good public schools, where they really prepare you for college and the workforce.

And for all the racists out there, having housing projects in your city does not dilute the quality of education.

From what I hear (first-hand) about the GC school district now, it sounds like the rest of the city - cronyism, greed, financial chaos and selfishness.
That is why my kids do NOT go to school there.

I agree with you Doc. Also there are alot of kids in the schools who are just plain bad and disrepectful. Their parents at home, are disaplining their kids. They send them to school and they act like animals. There are ALOT of kids in the GC Middle school who need help. It's not so great.

They are not punishing their kids. Lots of kids with emotional and social problems. And it starts at home.

I remember when I first attended Glen Cove Middle school (6th Grade, around 1978), I looked around me in the halls and saw fully mature men, 8th graders that were left back a few times - I knew 8th graders that were 16 years old. These kids had no business being around 11 yr olds, especially in locker rooms, etc.
That same year was when the "Scared Straight" program came out and the geniuses in the school administration or faculty decided to show it to all the boys - basically a show with hardened criminals terrorizing and cursing at kids in order to "scare" them from a life of crime. I remember afterward some of the kids going nuts and acting like the criminals in the hallways. I got my ass kicked in that school all the time by gigantic poorly-educated child-men... it was really bad then. The teachers would never intervene. I would never send my kids to a madhouse like that.

I can't believe what has happened to Long Island! Twenty years ago, Glen Cove was considered elite and exclusive.

Well, I am happy to say..and quite honestly, it is not like that at all now. Thank god!
But there seems to be alot of kids there with alot of emotional/behavior issues. Not sure, why that is. The teachers/counselors really do try to help as much as they can. But it starts at home with the parents. And god only knows what's going on in these childrens homes.

It's still kind of a seedy area. Just beware.

Long Island is going down and it is not racist to say so. The really bad part in Glen Cove is The Hill which also happens to be mostly black. Im not racist if I speak the truth. Stay out of Glen Cove and move north to Westchester or Rockland if you want your kids to grow up in a nice area.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Sagittarius

If you have any worries or problems today, a close colleague could have the answers you seek. Work will be satisfying, and anything to do with children should be very rewarding today. There could be friction with a relative, but it's nothing serious and things will sort themselves out in due course. Again, you must pay attention to your health, Saggitarius: skin infections are a strong possibility at the moment.
