They are really hairy and get dirty easily. The hair mats up and they will get more hair than usual all over your house. Unless you want to brush them constantly, stay away.

If you want to pay for a cat that's an excellent breed go with a Savannah, Pixie Bob or Bengal. Any domesticated breed either breed out of a wild breed or in the case of a pixie bob, a domesticated cat bred to mimic a wild breed.

I have a pixie bob. They are HUGE and like a dog. They play fetch and can open cabinet doors and have once tried to open a big door but couldn't get enough grip on the door. They love water, generally and will get in the pool and let you bathe them.

Savannah

Bengal

All of these cats, when purchased by reputable breeders, are worth a lot of money and are recognized by professional organizations. One could make a lot of money breeding. Savannah's have a few types depending on their DNA % of wild stock, some go for 20 thousand dollars. Most are around 5 grand for the least wild stock.

My parents have a Maine Coin and is expecting. We have no idea on the breed of the father. She was dropped at their house last spring as a older kitten. They plan to have her spayed when the kittens are weaned. Due anytime.

Are you sure they are a Maine Coon or just a long haired cat? Being a drop off there's no way to be 100% sure. If a person wants a cat or dog of a specific breed I suggest finding a breeder. That is, if they are really serious about it. It's great she's getting fixed. Cats multiply like crazy.

Pretty sure --- a good friend of mine has a female Maine Coon, and my parent's cat looks just like hers. Whether she 100% pure bred is anyone's guess. When it comes to adopting an animal, people should realize that too many animals are euthanized due to owners being irresponsible. The humane society is the way to go. Give an unwanted animal a home before seeking a breeder.

My parents did not have any pets when she showed up and it took awhile for her to warm up to them. They were upset to realize that she was expecting. Since this is her first (and only) litter, we are hopeful that the litter will be small in number. I just hope they will be able to find the kittens good homes. My dad is already fixing her a safe place to have them.

I guess as Bob Barker said it --- spay and neuter your pet!:-)

The humane society serves a purpose. But for those looking for a special breed, there's nothing better than knowing you have a pure bred animal with papers that you can either put in a show or breed for money yourself. And if someone shells a few hundred to a few thousand out for an animal, they are likely to fix it and treat it humanely. They truly are amazing. Not that mutts aren't, but you can tell a difference many times. Another issue with cats is FIV. Like HIV in humans it's deadly and it can spread to other cats. So if someone has a cat, and adopts another one from a pound it's possible it could have FIV and put your other animal in jeopardy. Always test the cat before adopting it so it doesn't give your other cats a disease. And lastly, yes animals are put down all the time, but that's the nature of the beast. It's population control. And, it's more human than letting them live under the circumstances.
