School Trustee Assaults Teacher Faces No Consequences Trustee's attorney says it's time 'to move on' By LARRY P. JORDAN, T&D CorrespondentWednesday, March 18, 2009 ST. MATTHEWS – If the large crowd at Monday’s Calhoun County School Board meeting expected fireworks to erupt over an incident back in January in which a trustee allegedly assaulted a teacher on school grounds, they were disappointed as no pyrotechnics materialized. During the meeting, former trustee Michael Drake, who lost his seat on the school board to Debra Fredrick, did raise the issue, telling the board he was concerned about an incident in which Fredrick allegedly assaulted teacher Jamarla Lewis on the campus of Calhoun County High School on Jan. 23. Although the altercation was documented in a Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department incident report, Lewis chose not to press charges. But Drake said Monday school board members should be held to a higher standard. “The incident was highly embarrassing for the board and the district,” he said. Board Chairman Tom Arant, however, responded that after investigation by the district, it was determined Fredrick could only be removed from her position if she resigned, if she lost the seat in a regular election or if the state legislature took action to remove her. Fredrick’s attorney, Hemphill Pride, attended Monday’s meeting, and he said it was time to “move on.” Arant said nothing occurred involving Fredrick that warranted her removal as a school trustee, saying that the matter had become a political issue and that the law would have to be changed or Fredrick’s constituents would have to vote her out of office for her to lose her seat on the board. Trustee Gary Porth had earlier called for Fredrick’s removal. He has said the idea that she would continue to serve on the board was “ludicrous.” As a board member, she’s responsible for the safety of teachers on campus, Porth said previously. “She’s held to a higher standard.... She’s a board member,” he said last month. The incident involving Fredrick began at 11 p.m. on Jan. 23 as two officers and Calhoun County head basketball coach Zam Fredrick were helping Lewis, whose tires had been slashed. One of the deputies reported Fredrick, the coach’s wife, drove up and insisted her husband leave with her. He responded he would leave once the car was drivable and not before. “After making several appeals to Mr. Fredrick about leaving, Mrs. Fredrick called the victim a ‘b ----’ and then grabbed the victim and began hitting her about the face,” the deputy’s incident report said. It was then broken up. The deputy reported Fredrick then called her daughter and sister to tell them about the incident. The two came to the school and “once there, Mrs. Fredrick and her daughter began to fight the victim again.” It was once again broken up. Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said last month,“No one wants to press any charges, and I have closed the case.” |
