You can say that about many towns who make their living off of tourists. But Gettysburg has gotten much worse in recent years.

With a statement like that I wonder if you have ever actually been to Gettysburg. I have found every visit I make to be very pleasant and a pleasurable experience.

To enjoy Gettysburg, you have to leave your $25 hotel room and stay out of the bars, and get around town, visit the shops and museums and talk with people.

Yes there are good hotels, both expensive and cheap. Have done bike tours, but getting to old for that now, but I enjoy walking portions of the field. Think sometime of one of the segway tours, or doing a horseback tour. Both give you a different perspective of things.

Sometime visit in the spring when the fruit tries are in bloom, it is lovely. And there are two other driving tours throughout the county that tell of other history in the area, besides just the Civil War.

Maybe there is another Gettysburg, but the historic town in Adams County is a very special and wonderful place. We've been there many, many times and only had
encounters with less than a handful of unfriendly persons. It's a hell whole lot better than most
places we've been to and if it were financially
feasible, I'd relocate there in a second.

As far as dirty hotels are concerned, we always stay at the Motel 6 on York Street and it is always neat
and clean. Manager Raju and family are awesome and go above and beyond caring for the comfort of their
guests. She also makes some of the best coffee in Gettysburg!

But to be honest 85th, haven't you run into one or two unfriendly people almost any place you go? And who knows for sure if those unfriendly people are locals or other visitors?

I have run into tourist in Gettysburg who were outraged because they couldn't find pizza like back home. I have found tourist who were upset because of traffic conditions in town over the July 4th weekend.

You can't make everyone happy no matter what you do, and almost everyplace I have ever visited I have found someone local or tourist who was not happy about something, but I never let it bother me, as it is only one or two people out of the hundreds I meet.

I am sure you have noticed that people in Gettysburg do not wear signs saying "I am local" or "I am a tourist".

Please continue to enjoy your visits to Gettysburg.

Its funny tourists come here. They complain about high prices expensive parking and nothing to do beside stare at the battlefield. This same people butt their noses in and tell us the residents that we shouldn't have a casino or a waterpark for that matter even certain retail stores
Then go as far as to sign petitions and write letters to elected officials to block those legal businesses from conning to gettysburg and NOW they have the nerve to moan and groan about the price to visit. HMMMMMMMM why do you think its so expensive?

Apparently you don’t understand.

Point one, GETTYSBURG National Military Park is owned and maintained by the Federal Government.

Point two, the GETTYSBURG National Military Park is located in Adams County, around Gettysburg, with small portions actually in the Borough of Gettysburg.

Point three, GETTYSBURG is probably the most well known battlefield location in the world.

Point four, every year people from all over the United States and many foreign countries visit the GETTYSBURG National Military Park.

Based on the above points, anyone who has ever read about the Battle of GETTYSBURG, anyone who has ever heard the name GETTYSBURG, anyone who has ever visited GETTYSBURG, or anyone who may someday visit GETTYSBURG knows more about what this community needs than anyone living in Gettysburg.

Gettysburg belongs to the nation and to the world. Even though you may live here, work here and pay taxes here, you have no right to say what goes on here.

What happens here should and will be determined by people who have read about the Battle of GETTYSBURG, people who have heard the name GETTYSBURG, people who have visited GETTYSBURG, and people who have never been here but may someday visit GETTYSBURG. They know more about what this community needs and what is best for this community than anyone living in Gettysburg.

You are correct, Gettysburg belongs to the nation not to the locals. Its about time you realize it and stop being so miserable. Now run along and fetch me something cool to drink. It's your low paying job and I expect good service from you..........LOCAL

LMFAO;Please let me know where I can find a reference for all those annoying outsiders who signed petitions and sent letters against the waterpark or a retail store.Or perhaps you could point me to an article showing the national outrage over the waterpark.Or are you, like the others, taking a local issue like the waterpark, that was stopped becuase you and the others did nothing to make it a reality, and try to tie it into the casino issue to play the "woe is us" card.

All right Pete I'll try to explain this to you one more time. The same group of locals were against it. Since there was not a built in "Anti-waterpark" audience like there is for anything with the word gambling in it they got a more lukewarm response. These locals tapped into an existing anti-gaming sentiment to prevent something from coming into their back yard. That said, Violet Clark is on record as speaking out against the waterpark. She is from Tennessee. "people don't come here for a good time, they come here to reflect" was roughly the quote. What a great vacation spot for younger people. If the waterpark group pushed harder they would have faced resistance albeit not as much as a casino. That does not mean the locals were not trying. It means they were less successful at galvanizing an "anti-waterpark sentiment". Are you clear now?

You are partially correct. The GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK belongs to the nation. It is maintained by tax dollars and every citizen who pays taxes supports it. But once you leave the boundaries of the national park it becomes private land. People who own the property pay taxes and the use of the land is controlled by local zoning. The federal government has no control over privately owned land that is properly zoned outside of the National Park.

Nile; You people try to spin things so far it is ridiculous. There is always going to be opposition to things from some people. The waterpark did not have the national outcry against it.Did the CWT come out against it?Were there nationwide petitions and letters,on the scale of the casino? No.It was a local issue. You even stated that you were not involved in the issue. The locals sat back and let the anti-waterpark people run roughshod over them. And so you try to lump this issue into the casino issue to try to play the hurt party that outsiders are telling you what you can and can't have.Pathetic.

No spinning Pete. Just fact.
The same people here stand against pretty much anything. With the casino issue they had built in opposition.
The waterpark did not have the national outcry against it..... Yeah.... so what? What is your point? It did in fact have some and that is fact. No one has said it reached the same level but you bring it up as if it is some controversy. If it had gone further don't think for one second Violet would not have been banging her drum and who knows how far it would have gone? I don't and neither do you. It is a fact that Violet, from Tennessee, spoke out against it. That is all anyone has said Pete. You blow stuff out of proportion to try and gain leverage in a debate. Please show me where any real NCG person claimed any of things you allege.

Nile; The Pro side are the ones who blow things out of proportion. You take a basically local issue, the waterpark, which had mostly local opposition with a few outsiders, and try to join that issue to the casino to make it look like outsiders are telling you what you can have. The anti-waterpark locals had their way because those for it did nothing. And you don't like that,so you try to take that local issue and twist it to your way of trying to play the agrieved party. The waterpark should not be used except to illustrate that locals who are against things are more organized than you. They fight to stop what they don not ant, while you people sit back and hope things happen, instead of working towards it.,

How so?
We joined it to the casino since it was the same local n'er do wells. You are the one dreaming stuff up and putting words in peoples posts. Please show me where anyone claimed write in campaigns and massive outsider influence on those items. You did not see it from me and I did not see it from anyone. Did some outsiders join the fray? sure, some did. The same old clowns that want their playground untouched by ANYTHING.
Those for it were shocked people would be against a waterpark. This was before Casino battle II so the ignorance of some people was still not 100% known. The group wanting it went quietly early so a chance for either side to muster forces never occured.
If you want to gab about local issues move here because you are talking out of your a$$.

Nile; The fact of the matter is those against the waterpark fought. You people did nothing. Now you are mad about that and try to portray outsiders as regulating your lives. Not true.If the waterpark did not come, that was because you people didn't do anything but "want" it to come.If you can't overcome the local opposition, that is your fault.Don't try to link the failed waterpark with the casino saying outsiders won't let you have anything. In other words, get off your computer and actually get involved.
