Hundreds attend auction of the estate of Terry Punt

I am puzzled why Punt's only daughter had to pay money in an auction to acquire a personal possession like her mother's wedding dress. Punt and the mother of his grown children had been divorced for some time, I believe. What on earth was his ex-wife's wedding dress doing in his possession anyway unless she had given it to him for safekeeping so their daughter could have it someday? In that case, their daughter ought not to have to purchase it at an estate sale.

I certainly hope others at the auction had the decency not to bid against her for it!

Very interesting article. I knew he had an interest in the Civil War, but not to this extent. The desk would have been a real nice thing to have, IMO.

Her mother died abruptly. But I don't understand why their daughter couldn't have gone into his residence and just taken the dress. Perhaps she didn't know her father had it. That doesn't sound likely, though.

It's a shame the items couldn't have been left to his children.

I am also confused as to why anything had to be purchased by the family. They should have been able to have anything they wanted.

Is there anybody who knows the answers to the previous questions? Is it because that's how he had it set up, or did the State force it that way?

I'm asking these questions because one of the neighbors hasn't made many arrangements for the inevitable, and was telling us last night that she figured her boys would fight it out. If she hasn't named an executor, does the State take over and do an auction like this, or is it a totally different situation?

Either to placate the kids, or because that's where he WANTED to be buried, I suppose. Just because you divorce somebody doesn't mean that you can't be buried next to them. My father-in-law was married 3 times, and was buried next to his 2nd wife because that's where he wanted to be buried.

Maybe he and his 2nd wife had purchased adjoining burial plots, and that was the easiest solution ...(instead of buying another plot, then trying to sell the adjoining plot ???)

Actually, he had a set of burial plots with both the 2nd and 3rd wives. the 3rd wife was a witch, so nobody questioned his choice to not be buried next to her. Her daughter lost her battle with cancer about a year ago, and the family gave dad's burial plot to her husband because the bills for her care were so expensive that he couldn't afford a burial plot.

I have a problem with filling up large plots of land with concrete and steel boxes when there is so little farmland anymore. The population grows, they need to be fed, and we're using ground to plant people. That's just how I feel about it. Hubby has never told me what his preference is; if he doesn't, he'll get burned, too.

I also don't understand why the kids are being forced to buy things from the estate. If the kids wanted to keep the stuff, they could simply report the value of it (if any) for inheritance tax purposes and it's done. No need to have a public auction and then buy it back.

I'm sure there is a valid reason why they did it this way.
