Day-care danger Do you leave your kids too close to a child sex offender?

Child sex offenders live near hundreds of day-cares in Illinois, including 37 in the metro-east, despite a state law that was supposed to keep them at least 500 feet apart.
A News-Democrat investigation of more than 4,000 day cares found that 786 of them -- including 718 home day cares and 68 commercial day cares -- had at least one registered sex offender within 500 feet.
But a flaw in the wording of the 2006 law means that none of the state's home day cares are covered.
And even if the law covered the home day cares, police would have trouble enforcing it because the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services doesn't give them updated day-care addresses. Read more
