Gatlinburg residents opening Christian-themed attraction

Full story: Knoxville News Sentinel

Christus Gardens maybe gone from Gatlinburg, but two local investors believe there is enough demand for a Christian-themed tourist destination in Sevier County to reopen the site as Christ In The Smokies Museum and Gardens.

Good news to hear a new Christian themed attraction is opening. I was sad when Christus Gardens closed, as I am 60 years old can remember as a young girl my grandfather taking my family through the gardens and the affect it had on my life. Now with my Grandchildren who come to Gatlinburg every year with their Grandfather and myself it was always a breath of fresh aire to escape the horror shows and carnival atmosphere for a short period of time, not to say we don't enjoy the whole Gatlinburg experience, the gardens were just something VERY special. I look forward to visiting the new attraction and hope the new owners will keep the price as reasonable as the previous owners did!

Will it have Adam and Eve riding on dinosaurs or show how Noah was able to fit thousands of mammals, ten thousand reptiles/amphibians and hundreds of thousands of insects + tons and tons of food all on to 1 boat?

Will it have attractions that feature all of the atrocities of the bible and the havoc humans have caused in the name of god?

I hope that it will not let anyone one in that isn't strictly adhering to christian 'code'. Things like eating shrimp, wearing clothes of two types of material, non-married people that have had sex, homosexuals, people that work on the sabbath, people that treat their slaves improperly, people that have dishonored their parents and all the other wonderful restrictions required to be a 'good' christian should be barred from entering.

Oh what a joy!!

Maybe it will even be the sight of Jesus's second coming!! Can you imagine a better place than a pseudo-shrine to christianity built on the site of one failed 'christian' endeavor after another. Of course, Jesus will have to pay the admission price. I mean, hey, this is a business, after all...

Where will the Noah's Ark Penguin display be? Will it be right next to the Kangaroo exhibit? Perhaps beside the Polar Bear extravaganza would be an appropriate place.

I hope they include the ever inspiring bible quote: Malchi 2:3: Behold I will corrupt your seed and spread dung upon your faces. My personal favorite!

Maybe Mark 3,29: "He that shall blaspheme against the holy ghost hath never forgiviness but is in danger of eternal damnation." could be a whole seperate area with fires, pain and torture. They could have everyone crowd into a hot room with huge, smelly, dirty people and tell them that their loving Jesus will love them for eternity while he makes them agonize in torment forever.

Guess Jesus didn't like the folks who ran the Christus Gardens place into the ground. Maybe he'll take a better liking to the newest profit seekers! He works in mysterious ways, don't he?

Sounds like someone has really been hurt by "the church" at some point. I hope you eventually get over your issues.

Gatlinburg needs more Christian theme attractions. It's nothing but tee shirts and tattoo places.

Should open a merchandise stand for Muslim dogma, too. The Christites seem to have a monopoly on brainwashing in eastern Tennessee.

It is too bad that some of those "Christian Values" don't rub off on some of our local politicians. The part about "thou shall not steal" would be a good place to start!

Apparently convenient to swap around real estate for real estate, is that how this transfer of management came to be at Christus Gardens?

Real Estate records show Ligdon and others of Cleveland - down in the Lee College area - have acquired acreage on Birds Creek, was there a swap between Proffitt and Ligdon andis Steve McSween also involved now with Ligdon? Records show he owns about 500 acres on English Mountain which emcompasses the county line btween Cocke and Sevier, almost 100 acres in Cocke County.

If you haven't noticed prsparation for road-widening on Birds Creek, take a drive thruogh, fertile opportunity for those cats scouting ahead digigng holes and covering up after themselves - improvement in the economy here in Sevier County, regardless which way you are viewing.

We need more investors here in the county swinging on the coat tale of Lee College, or even move Lee College to Sevier county before we bring in the Muslim. We could put Lee on one side of the road and the Muslim dogma stand on the other.

Proffitt is a weasel, scurring about quietly in the background but always doing something shifty. He can't be trusted and he sure knows how to work the system for personal profit. Just another one of the self serving "me first" commissioners.

Gatlinburg needs something but not Christian themed attractions - please anything but that. We stay in Gatlinburg to avoid Pigeon Forge because of all the Christian themed/country music attractions. Tacky, tacky, tacky. Gatlinburg needs to lure the craftspeople back to downtown, open some coffee shops and funky shops, and market the place as a hip alternative to Pigeon Forge.

My husband and his brother were traumatized by Christus Gardens when they were children. They screamed and cried when they heard something about real eyes. I never went myself but to hear him tell it it was a horrible experience.

I agree. There's a lot more than just minivans packed with christian looking for tacky gift shops and outlet malls that come to these mountains now.

Here in Asheville we're keeping the traditions of local craft and art and attracting a very diverse part of the tourist market. Plus, outdoor enthusiast come here for the multitude of activities. Great place to live or visit, IMO.

The southern Appalachian mountains as a tourist attraction should focus more on art, craft, culture and environment/outdoors and less on hokey cheap tourist attractions and gift stands. People want more than just cheap plastic novelties.

How will this fit in with all the tee shirt shops and tattoo parlors? Good idea, but afraid it's just too late.

Get your facts straight, Billy Proffitt has never served on ANY city county or state representative body. And what are the other "shifty" things he's guilty of, or were you just spouting off s***.

based on.....? Got it, jealousy. I guess if that's all you can come up with (and all of the sudden making him some kind of commissioner) you better stay offline and stick to asking if anyone "wants fries with that." :)
