Fitchburg police say stabbed man stable

FITCHBURG -- Police continue to investigate a stabbing that occurred at an out-of-control party early Friday morning, Sgt. Glenn Fossa said Friday afternoon.

The 24-year-old victim said he initially thought he was punched in the abdomen during a fight at 112 Myrtle Ave., then he later realized he had been cut. His assailant was described as a white man, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall.

"When officers arrived to a call of a large disturbance in the area, they observed from 50 to 80 individuals coming from 112 Myrtle Ave.," Fossa said.

Officers received "varying accounts of what happened," including vast differences in the suspect's description and how the altercation began. The victim is believed to have been in a group of men who showed up to an ongoing party uninvited.

UMass Memorial Medical Center's public-affairs office did not return phone messages asking about the victim's condition. The last Fossa heard, around 3 p.m., is that the man's health was stable.
