If the IDA feels the hotel really needs tax breaks, why don't the IDA officials pay the difference out of their own pockets.
These officials will probably be getting something in return for the tax breaks.
Once again, the taxes private citizens pay will be increased to cover the shortfall.
If the hotel owners are REAL business people, they should pay their own way.
As always, the middle class & the poor are expected to subsidize the wealthy.
__________
WHAT A JOKE!!!!!
__________
The fact that the hotel's legal team is suing the school district should be reason enough to eliminate the tax breaks. All of these theives should be run off this island.

Lawyers pacing the hallways all afternoon...at $600 per hour, all trying to keep school taxes from getting paid. A noble profession indeed. Could I get some of them to pace for me at say $150 an hour to save me a few housand in my school taxes?

One might have to as the others are probably "full time" employees of the school district! So they have figured out a way to fight against the school tax for the developer and fight for the school tax for the school district and get paid by both at the same time. What a sweet deal.

Proof positive that the morons running County Government are the cause of people being taxed out of their homes in Nassau County!!!!!

STOP THE SELF-SERVING, POLITICALLY MOTIVATED GIVE-AWAYS and start representing the interests of the taxpayers!!!!!!!!!!

Alternatively, let the School District and Village file for Class Action Certification of their suit and whip the begeebees out of the IDA!!!!!!!!!!

The buyer has said the deal will not work without the IDA forced tax breaks. Then the buyer has made a poor deal, they paid to much. If the buyer has not got a clause in his contract that gives him an out, if the IDA tax breaks did not happen he should sue his Lawyer who did a poor job. He should not sue the Garden City schools. The school board is doing it's job here, trying to protect the tax base. The IDA which is not elected, should not in anyway be able to raise my taxes by shifting the burden on to the homeowners of Garden City!
The bigger issue here is that taxes are too high. Taxes devalue assets, be it a home or in this case a hotel. Taxes keep Businees from choosing Long Island, taxes make existing firms look long and hard at expansion here. Taxes are killing our economy!! The IDA should figure out a way to lower overall tax burdens to attract jobs. Private sector jobs. Perhaps we could shink the public sector, start by sending Fred Perola packing.

This is a luxury hotel--probably the most luxurious in Nassau County. Why should a luxury hotel get a tax break? The greedy children of the owner of the hotel should reduce the price of the property. Sounds like the prospective owner is OVERPAYING if the deal doesn't work without tax breaks.

Why should the rest of the owners of property in Garden City had their taxes raised to subsidize the guy? On what basis did IDA reduce the taxes on this property.

I am all for this law suit, but it's unnecessary. Have the owner reduce the price or let this guy walk. Hopefully he gets the message he is not wanted in Garden City. Garden City resdients shouldhave nothing to do with this hotel. No weddings. No senior prom.

NYS already screws Garden City in school re-imbursements, now the IDA too. When are they going to reduce my taxes.

Forget St. Pauls. GC residents should focus on this issue.

This guy Schlesinger is a real piece of garbage. What did Bill Shakespeare say about the lawyers back in the day? What do you call 400 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? A GOOD START!

I was answering the above question as the quote from Shakespeare's Henry VI play. Any of your lawyers ever read Shakespeare or attend a Shakepearean theatre production.

Does anyone else think it's petty that this guy is paying $90 million for the Garden City Hotel plus what he paid for the new hotel he's building in Long Beach (how much was that?$22 million and counting?) and he's whining about tax breaks? Sounds like someone is having trouble getting financing to close the deal.

Legal Eagle, I don't think PETTY is the right word. The guy is cheap and just wants someone else to pay for it. He thinks the people of GC should pay for part of his deal. Did the City of Long Beach give him tax breaks???
