I have a son who has been recruited to play baseball at Garden City Community College. I have yet to hear anyone who has lived in or visited Garden City have anything positive to say about the town. My son is leaning toward another college because of the negative reports on Garden City. Is the town really that bad?

I live in Garden City and trust me if I could get out of here, I would. On the other hand...it's not as bad as it's made out to be. Major crime for the most part is no issue. Overall it's a safe place to be, there's just NOTHING to do

I am the official "Garden City Booster". Yes Garden City is a great place to be, I love it. Sure we have our share of crime, sure every pickle park is crawling with gays (that translates to Country Corner but it's not as gay friendly as it was after the Coop sold it) and most certainly about every crack whore in town is infected with AIDS...but it's not that bad either.
We have a nice zoo, the worlds largest concrete swimming pool and it's real easy to find weed.
I guess that's what I like about this town, something for everybody!

I've been a Garden City resident all of my life. I've served on many local boards and am an elder in my church and am overall (and rightly so) highly respected in the community.
Garden City is a very progressive community. I've pushed hard - in the back ground of course - to make certain that Gay Pride week is a huge community event. I have fought against the prejudice that surrounds anal sex and have made huge strides in that regard.
I'm proud of the community and very, very, extremely proud of all that I've done for the community. Like I've always said, "If it's good for me it's good for Garden City!"

Now you've seen the responses from two products of the community college. Don't send your kid to Garden City.

Garden City doesn't have much to do. The people there are nice. Just one example of that. On 9/11, 3 jumbo jets were forced to land there as all aircraft were grounded and Denver, Wichita, and Kansas City were just too far away. Garden City's runway was built that way for that reason. But on this note, People who didn't know any of those passengers brought them into their homes because there are not enough hotel rooms in Garden City and Church's opened to feed those people. It was an exercise of goodwill. As far as there not being much to do there, there isn't, but that also means its harder to get into trouble or get shot. Garden City JUCO has a good and recognized athletic program. But it is in the middle of the edge of nowhere. Just don't go to Lamar College in Lamar, Colorado. That is the middle of nowhere!

And a note for those that think they're stuck in Garden City. I'm from Ulysses originally. I left there in 1996 with nothing more than my car and whatever I could fit in it. That wasn't much. But you aren't locked into Garden City. You can leave whenever you want. Colorado Springs, Kansas City, Amarillo, Oklahoma City aren't that far away. If you keep the attitude that you can't leave, you will continue victimizing yourself.

I LOVE Garden City, Kansas of America under God. I wasn't born here but am darned glad that I moved here 30 years ago and made this little town home.
I guess at one time a person could complain about being a long way from no where but I don't believe that complaint is valid today. We have great raods in and out of Garden, a very nice regonal airport and Amtrack service. It's not that far, doesn't take that long and is convenient to travel to anywhere from Garden City.
Also Garden has very good retail shopping, Walmart, Sears, JC Penny's, Sam's Club, hardware stores, car dealers, etc., make this a regional destination for shoppers who live in Western Kansas, Eastern Colorado, Olkahoma and Texas Panhandles and Soutwestern Nebraska.
In addition we have great schools,(including a community college) a fine library, a YMCA and a great City Recreation program.
We also have a fine hospital and many doctors, dentists and specialist here.
I could go on and on but in my opinion this is a great place to work, go to school, raise a family and live!

My son is playing on a fall team that is traveling to Garden City Ks to play in a few weeks. Although I think the jr college route may be the way to go for some baseball players I think you (and your son) also have to get comfortable with the idea that ALL jr colleges are somewhere between here and nowhere. What position does he play?

He's a pitcher and we found a better place to go than Garden City.

I wouldn't move here if my life depended on it! I moved here only to be closer to my fiancee who had a better job than me. Since I have been in this county, things have gotten nothing but worse...crime rate has shot UP since Tyson plant welcomed Chicago people in....no one speaks english anymore....walmart is so packed with trash you can't even go there (oh and unless u speak spanish u can't get help)! I am an RN...and I can't even get a decent paying job!!! Imagine what a college kid would earn if an RN can't even pay her bills!!!!! This entire county is full of trash, and pregnant teenagers!!! This county has th3e highest prego rate per capita!! wanna know y??/ Because once they have kids, they go on welfare.......thanks for funding ignorant underage girls who can't finish high school!

I'm sooooooooooo sorry you feel the way you do about Garden City. Oh, I've an idea....why don't you move? There are lot's of places who would like to have a pro...uh I'm sorry I ment to say PROFESSIONAL person - a Real Nurse in their community.
I'm very surprised that you can't find work as a Real Nurse in this community UNLESS, no it COULDN'T BE, I probably shouldn't even say it BUT you weren't getting into the hospitals stash of MORIPHINE were you???? That might be the reason why you can't get a job, but I'm certain that's not the case, I shouldn't have even THOUGHT that! SHAME ON ME!!!
Oh, I forgot, your boy friend is here and you can't leave until he gets out of the slammer...oh sorry, that's not what you said is it..you said he has a JOB here.
That's weird, he must be a real loser if the only place he can find a job is in SW Kansas. I mean he must be a real dork, a weirdo, a DUH, a moron; that's enough, you should get the picture. I'm soooooo sorry you hooked up with that imbecile, if you hadn't you could be living in, uh some real cool place like Junction City or Salina or Goodland or "ThanfranThisco", or some neat place like that.
Anyway, I was born and raised here and am real PROUD of it. They highway runs both ways, get on it and get OUT!!!!
