Security Firm To Patrol Gaithersburg Parks - News Story - WRC |...

A contracted security firm will start patrolling Gaithersburg city parks on July 1. The officers will make sure visitors obey park rules and city ordinances, including park hours, city officials said.

The City of Gaithersburg has its own police force... why aren't _they_ doing the patrolling?

This is extremely good because when there is extra help needed, it will soon take effect. The parks need to be cleaned up and maintained. Our tax dollars can go to the park personnel for their work.

Um. I guess it's good. But as a previous topic brought up, shouldn't GPD do this? After all, they aren't the primary police force for the Gaithersburg calls anyway, so...more time on their hands means more time to patrol parks.

Gaithersburg PD doesn't handle their own calls in the city. It only makes sense that the city would hire a private, civilian security company with no authority or police powers to patrol the parks. And who is going to be called to handle the incidents created by the security company? MCP???
Remind me again why there is still a Gaithersburg City Police Department?

The private security firm could be backed up by local mitilas or passersby quickly pressed into service in an emergency. Also airborne reinforcements could be sent by private jet if somebody refuses to leave the park. Where are the homeless going to sleep if they are run out of the park. Where are drug parties going to be held? Now the homeless and drug parties will invade neighborhoods. The park systems were made to draw homeless people and drug parties not for the entertainment of people who have their own homes and backyards.
