I understand your point on entering in the correct, legal manner. My issue is more with the people who support the "wild west rope-n-dope" round people up like animals mentality that is plaguing much of this country.
I'm a 3rd generation Italian-Irish-Czech-Croation-U krainian and all my ancestors entered through Ellis Island as well. Both my grandfathers proudly served in WWII.
My point is that when the Irish came, when the Italians came, when each successive generation of immigrants came--they were subjected to bigotry, hatred, and the like.
We have to stand up for human rights here.
Many of the people who are being deported are NOT criminals and many DO pay taxes.
It is not as simple as being LEGAL or ILLEGAL. There are various forms of papers that are somewhere in-between--work visas, student visas, travel visas, etc.
And many countries have different policies and require yearly renewal at EXHORBITANT fees!--its a racket.
Also, many people who were caught in Irving were subjected to "check-point" stops which is a Civil Rights violation.
Also, entire MALLS, apartment complexes, etc. are being scathed as if they are "hunting" people and people are being rounded up and stuffed in buses.
This HAS to stop. Let's help people FIX their papers, NOT treat them as sub-human.
