You’ve heard the saying,“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” In a practical sense this might be the way to go if your main concern is getting along with people whose customs are different from yours. If, however, you have resolved not to conform to ungodly standards of the world, your commitment might just turn the old “do as the Romans do” adage on its head.
Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way (Daniel1:8).
In Babylonian exile, Daniel did not allow unfamiliar circumstances to change who he was and what he believed. He resolved to remain true to his ancestral faith by refusing to eat the king’s delicacies, which apparently were condemned by the Levitical purity laws. He refused to conform just to fit in.
It has never been easy to live for God in an ungodly world. No matter where you find yourself today, resolve not to live the way of the world, but God’s way.
Challenge for Today: Resolve not to compromise your faith.
