Probably the biggest mistake. After reading these issues about murder, racism, rapes, etc. It's worse than some of the big cities I have lived in. The police seem to stay in town around the Ace Hardware instead of patroling the city. I.E. I drove down harvey road to visit a friend and two black gentlemen ( not a racist comment, A fact, were shooting semi automatics into the creek by this little bridge. If they were white, I would have said that. Where are the police on harvey rd, where are they on columbia rd. They are too busy protecting the Ace Hardware and the immediate townsfolk. You have crime because the police are not patroling where we all live. And as far as racism, it goes both ways. Some blacks want to relive a war we had nothing to do with to get something free for the rest of their life. Just look at the welfare and unemployment lines. And the whites are no better. They ride around with their monster trucks waving a rebel flag and they are too stupid to know what it really means. I picked up a black gentlemen last week who needed a ride and he was very intelligent man. wise beyond his years. Get over yourselves and look out for one another and let go of the past that you were too young to know about anyway. And become a country of civilized human beings.

I have relatives in that town and I agree with Dean,s comments.I feel, when we go visit, that we have arrived in a third world country and that we needed a passport to get there. every time we want to run out of there as fast as we can, I could never live there, poverty striken, welfare, crime and the I dont care attitude
and its not the countrysideof the town, its the people including my relatives.I can,t relate

I am an African American woman who has lived in Franklinton, LA and still have family all through out this little town. I have never encountered any problems the 2 years. My parents have been there for 5 years and my grandparents have been there most of their lives. I think it is a town just like any other in the US. You have some good and bad. Doesnt make it a horrible place to live. I have lived in town on Greenlaw and I have stayed with my parents further out on Old Columbia and we have NEVER had any issues. I actually like the area.

I LIVE IN FRANKLINTON, AND OWN A BUSINESS HERE. I AM A "COME HERE", AND IT WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE, COMING HERE, SINKING MYSELF IN A BUSINESS IN A TOWN WHERE THE ECONOMY IS ON THE ROCKS, THE TAXES ARE THE HIGHEST IN THE STATE. I HAVE BEEN TREATED MISERABLY BY BLACKS & WHITES, EVERYBODY HERE IS CRAZY, AND WHEN I SEE PEOPLE ACTUALLY CONSIDERING MOVING HERE, I FEEL AN OBLIGATION TO TELL THEM HOW IT REALLY IS HERE.
BECAUSE NOBODY TOLD ME. THE COPS ARE A JOKE, THE YOUTH IS TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL, THE OFFICIALS IN THE TOWN ARE CORRUPT, AND IF ALL THAT ISNT ENOUGH FOR YOU, THE DOG FOOD PLANT STINKS!! AND BELIEVE ME JUST WHEN YOU THINK THAT IT CANT POSSIBLY GET ANY WORSE, YOU LOOK AROUND, AND SEE SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS SO ABSURD, YOU DONT BELIEVE YOUR OWN EYES. WHEN I TELL PEOPLE HOW CRAZY IT IS HERE, THEY LAUGH, THEY THINK THAT I AM MAKING JOKES. BUT AS GOD AS MY WITNESS ITS ALL THE TRUTH. BELIEVE ME, YOU DONT WANT TO MOVE TO FRANKLINTON, SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE, WHERE THE TOWNSPEOPLE ACTUALLY WORK FOR A LIVING, AND WHERE YOU CAN WALK DOWN THE STREET AND BE RESPECTED AND TREATED IN A FRIENDLY WAY. YOU CANT EVEN GO GET A HAMBURGER HERE WITHOUT IT TURNING INTO A MAJOR ORDEAL, BECAUSE YOU WILL BE TREATED RUDELY, AND HAVE TO LISTEN TO EVERYONE TALK ABOUT "THEY BABY DADDY" ETC ETC SO ON AND SO FORTH.
TRUST ME, LIVING IN FRANKLINTON, AINT LIVING, ITS A MISERABLE EXISTENCE.

I grew up in Franklinton and always loved the place and the people. As for the economy, it is in the toilet everywhere. The crime can't be worse than anywhere else. Bad economy plus Katrina equals bad outloks and more fear. We have a lot more in the small town where I live in Mississippi. I say, take the town and make it your own. Do something, file complaints with the police dept... talk to the newspapers...Actively change things! Trust me it works. It can be a nice small town again...I would move to Franklinton today if I could!

I totally agree with you. People are so quick to complainbut are they doing anything to make the situation better? Most likely not. Like I said, I was there for nearly 2 years and not from there. I moved there from California, so yes it was a totally different environment to adjust to but its truly not that bad. It would be nice if they fixed things up a bit and tried to improve the area but its a nice little towm to live in. My family & I kept ourselves active in church, which is a great thing. So there are ways to look at it in different persepectives. People need to learn how to make the best of their situation because they are the ones that control the outcome.

Well isn't somebody a bitter little rind? If you always have that attitude it's no wonder you weren't happy in Franklinton. You probably wouldn't be happy anywhere.

True, the economy is not great, but the taxes are NOT the highest in the state... not even the highest in the parish. They're certainly much lower than in some other places I've lived.

The "dog food plant" is actually a feed mill that makes all sorts of animal (including fish & reptile) foods. I don't like the smell either, but it's MUCH better than the smell of the paper mill and chemical plant in Bogalusa.

Perhaps if you're so unhappy here you should move to somewhere more perfect. The rest of us are still trying to improve on what is already here.

Everyone here is focusing on Franklinton, the bigger issue is that Washington parish in general is that way. The local people boast about dairy and melons as the big cash crop. This is pale in comparison of the biggest export, the young people of the parish are blazing a trail out of there.

I once lived there and for the exception of a few people that accepted my family, was treated coldly and an outsider. I read someone use the term come here. The "born theres" use it to segregate themselves to be left alone. They don't want interaction from outsiders but they want your money!

My mother told me once that she was in a local shop when a person came in to ask the owner if she was coming to the meeting at church that night. Someone from New Orleans had died and wanted to be buried in "their" cemetary. She plainly stated that she was going to fight it all the way, because she didn't want come here buried in her cemetary. That was waaay out of line.

The people that run this parish and town want your tax dollars and nothing more. Go there and expect to be isolated and shunned for two or three generations.

I live in Franklinton and I have to say that this is not the place to move to the people are rude. the school system is far behide then other schools the teachers dont care about the kids an how they learn. There is nothing for kids to do but hang out in parking lots get high an drink. And as far as the crime they have alot more then you already heard they have no news in the paper they keep everything quite here. its hard to get a good job because most everyone hires someone they know or family. i have been here almost all my life off and on an if i could i would leave an never look back people look at you like you are sick or trash because they dont know you or your business. i hope this helps please if you have kids an plan moving here vist first

Daily Horoscope for December 1

Taurus

Today is potentially very romantic, as the Moon and Venus enliven your sex life. If you open up your heart, you'll be pleasantly surprised. The Bull is slow to fall in love, but tends to be very loyal and committed, which makes it important for you to choose your partners wisely. You feel more intense, especially from the standpoint of the psychological motivations and behavior patterns involved.
