I have had two children that attended MEC. The oldest was one of the original students, under Mr. Brown and then Mr. Gibbs. She was told by Mr. Gibbs at the beginning of her Senior year, that she might as well quit because she would never graduate. She did not quit. And she just graduated with her AA. I will admit she was not an A student but she did try her hardest. Her feat was not in any way assisted by Mr. Gibbs. Futhermore, he convinced several of her classmates (in their senior year) to quit. In my opinion, you should NEVER tell a child to quit anything. What does this teach them?

Secondly, my youngest child attended her Freshman year at MEC under Mr. Gibbs. She had a medical condition that forced her to be late to school on several occassions (until she had surgery). Mr. Gibbs was so uncaring of the situation. If she were late, even with a doctors note, she was not aloud to enter her classroom. She was to sit in the hallway until class was over. She was also not aloud to do her homework, while waiting in the hallway. He told her "why are you doing homework? You don't care about school anyway." and would make her put her books away.

I have a real issue with Mr. Gibbs, and I am thankful that my oldest daughter is done there and did not submit my youngest to that mental abuse any longer.

Don't get me wrong, MEC is a great school. They have some great teachers and it is a great opportunity. But, I agree, this man has no business there.

Anyone who goes to MEC and shows up will get As and be praised unless they are total losers. They have to be really bad not to get an A in every class.

MEC is all about politics, not education.

People, if this man gives you trouble you can go over his head and get it fixed. He is on lockdown with the administrative office (figuratively) and Mr. Brigman is well aware of his many many many errors.
I have found that in Franklin people are too passive and just think it's nice not to make waves and put themselves out there. Who cares what your silly church folk think? Or who your momma is or whatever.
What about you? Don't you care about yourself more than other people? How are you going to put other ppl over you children. Your children.
I don't care what anybody says. I have rights and nobody can take them away from me. Go to the top people. No need to discuss with Gibbs. Over his head. And if that doesn't work go higher. Stand up. Buck up.
These teachers think that they can do anything and everything they want to these kids and the reason that they get away with it is you passive "nice people" don't defend them. Shame on you for teaching your kids to be that way too. If they ever leave Franklin they are going to need the skills to deal with this kind of thing. There is a big big world out there. Nice doesn't work everywhere.
Put him on blast for every little thing. Everything. The more they know the better equipped they (Administration) are to fix it.

The teachers aren't the problem. All of the teachers are loved and respected by the students, with the exception of Mrs. Cabe and Mrs. Fromnecht, especially. We have the best staff that I have ever even heard of at a school, let alone a free one. Mr. Alich is an especially good example of a teacher. He communicates concepts very effectively, he makes class fun, and above all, he respects his students. Mrs. Ritter is another awesome teacher. Respect is a cornerstone of both of these teachers' styles, and everyone loves them for it. Mr. Gibbs is another story entirely. I am often confused when talking to him, because from the tone of voice he uses, I would guess that I'm in trouble. Not the case. His tone is not unlike that which one would use when explaining a concept to a kindergartener, and often comes off as angry. We, the students are not stupid. Well, at least not most of us. There are the potheads that disgust the rest of us, but they are the exception. Most of us are perfectly capable of comprehending without the use of the looks and tones he uses. Nobody says anything because nobody knows who to say something to. If more people knew about this, people with stories would come crawling out of the woodwork. I usually refrain from using offensive language, but I feel that there is no better way to describe Gibbs. He is an asshole. That is what most students think of him, but won't say anything. As I said before, we're not stupid, and we know the difference between respect and disrespect. After all, it is continuously demanded from us. What do we get in return? Nothing. Not even decent administration. Seems like if you're going to give us an asshole for a principal, you could at least give us a competent asshole. Guess not.

As a Macon Early College student, I am profoundly familiar with the situation at the school. Mr. Gibbs has no patience for immaturity and will work to correct wrong behavior, he does not unjustly attack every student at MEC, he only works as an effective principal to protect the integrity of our program and help it be recognized as the gift that it is. He has done nothing to deserve the abhorrence that is presented here. He is a good principal who recognizes the importance in our acting mature while attending a college. The people at Southwestern Community College are paying to be there, and we absolutely cannot disrupt them. As Macon Early College students, we must act in a way that portrays our program as a useful part of the North Carolina public school system- it is that that Mr. Gibbs works to improve. He is not too strict, he is the right person to have for the job. His attitude protects our program from the students that would embarrass it. As an optional part of the school system, MEC must receive great praise to remain. Mr. Gibbs recognizes the need for our schools appearance, and his efforts are devoted to helping our school remain a prestigious mark of the Macon County school system.

Oh behalf of Mr. Gibbs, I agree with Noah. I have read some posts on here that I particularly don't agree with and I know you don't care to hear that but you should know that MEC is about getting ahead in life, learning life lessons, and they teach us here at MEC exactly that. They, as in gibbs and other teachers there, try and get us to realize how much harder it is going to be when you get out of school and on your own reguardless of how they teach us these. Todd Gibbs has his own method to his madness. For example, if there is a student not doing so well just because they simply dont care, Gibbs will tell him straight to his face how it's going to be and how it's going to end up. With Todd there is no beating around the bush; he gets straight to the point. He will tell you that you are going to fail, he will tell you that at this moment in your life you are not doing your best, and he will tell you that you will never make it because he expects you to prove him wrong. That's why he says all that. He doesn't want you to graduate with no lesson on how life is going to be. He does all this to make you use your brain and figure things out on your own. Speaking as a senior from MEC, it has been the best experience of my life. It has really been life changing. Now, as for the people sitting here with nothing better to do than dis on a principle that you don't even know, and haven't taken the time to know, what are you teaching all the kids that are reason this? You are teaching them to be prejudice. You are teaching them to judge someone before you get to know them. You haven't walked in Gibbs's shoes, you don't know what he is about or anything. So, before you say that he puts down your kids, why don't you take a walk in his shoes and see how lazy your kid is at school. When that kid comes home with a bad grade on their report card, buckle down and be a parent. Tell them that they need to get a move on. That's what Mr. Gibbs's job is. It's to help kids succeed, and get something out of life, and to not be prejudice unlike most of you. So, if you don't want Todd Gibbs pushing your kid along in the right direction and doing your job for you, then I suggest you take your kid out of MEC and be satisfied with it and stop talking behind peoples back. How would you like it if this post was about you? Bet you that you wouldn't like it not one bit. Before you judge someone, learn about them!!!!

In over a decade as an educator in elementary through college, both public and private, Todd Gibbs is one of the best principals I have ever worked with. He is dedicated to MEC and the students there, continually working to improve the school and the communication between MEC and the college. ANY, and I mean ANY, advising/scheduling errors brought to his attention are IMMEDIATELY corrected. He willingly meets with parents, students, faculty, and staff who have concerns. He works incredibly hard to motivate and assist all students.

James Martin, your ignorance regarding early college is astounding. Please, take the time to education yourself.

Mr Martin, you should really be ashamed of yourself! My child is an MEC student and I will be the first to tell you she is NOT by any means a "pampered pet"!!! Anyone else that knows her will tell you the same!! My daughter has busted her butt over the years to gain the accomplishments that she has so far and you have NO IDEA what she has had to deal with while trying to make these accomplishments! As a matter of fact, I would just about bet you have no idea what ANY of the other students are like either, so shame on you for trying to put them down!!!

Yes, I am speaking of my own child, but how dare you say this is not a "real school"! Do you have ANY idea how difficult and strenuous the classes are at MEC? Were you taking COLLEGE level classes a a FRESHMAN or even as a SENIOR in high school? I find it really hard to believe that you were!!
