I have several questions regarding the "Herkimer County Fair".
Does the county and state contribute any money to the those who run the Fair?
Is the Fair a tax free enterprise?
Does the Fair fill out a tax return either as a business or a charitable institution?
Who owns the grounds the Fair inhabits?
Who oversees the finances the Fair takes in?
Who and in what amounts are paid to ALL fair employees?
The original purposes of fairs was for agricultural people to meet and share ideas on better ways to farm and use new equipment and for people to socialize at a reasonable price. I would say this aspect of the old meaning of a County Fair is now defunct. The prices for entry and parking used to be free. That is no longer true. The prices for food and carnival rides are ridiculous.
And two final questions where does the money go
and what public agency oversees their finances?

You can contact the Herkimer County Fair Association, Inc. via their website or Facebook. I believe that most if not all of your questions can/will be answered if you ask them. Good luck!

I recall a number of years ago when the Fair committee was receiving free or reduced electricity and water rates, the County Legislator asked them to bring in their books and the fair committee responded something to the effect they were a private entity and the legislature had no right to see their books.

FYI the fair has nothing to do with the "County"! They lease the name from the county, thats it, end of story! They are a bunch of independent woodchucks running side shows for their own personal gain! You will get no answers from them, they don't have to answer to anybody!

I love to overpay to go to a gathering of scuzzy people, to eat food that will inevitably make me fat like most people there, drink with a bunch of hillbilly loudmouths with their scum wives\things, and drain my wallet on rigged overpriced games all while having to look at the toothless drunk druggies that work and linger in a creepy way around the entire area. Oh what fun times indeed. I'll stay home instead..

Poor Vigil you seem like your lonely. You must be real proud talking it down like you yourself are something of a greater importance.

Well, I need to say something about the fair. I think that it is way overpriced to attend. You not only are required to pay for entrance, but for the events as well (i.e., derby). What about the families that can't afford to bring their children there? They need to lower their prices. Better yet, don't pay an entrance fee. People spend enough money inside. I haven't gone in a few years. It isn't worth it.

plus if you leave for longer than the 1/2 hr temp pass, they try and make you pay another $8 admission...so if kids go for rides earlier in day and want to leave and go back later..,another $8. what a rip-off. unbelievable.

I agree it is over priced. However, if there are families that cannot afford it, maybe they should have less kids. Or they could cut out the.cigarettes and beer.

I never go to a fair unless they have a fat lady getting laid by a donkey.

what a bunch of whiny broke-ass mofos ... and cheap!

admission is a whole $7 for adults, whoopity doo. it costs more to go to a movie or have two beers. where else can you pay $7 and see for free a Hungarian hottie twirling 50 hula hoops simultaneously?

you get to see free entertainment and enjoy the sights and sounds.

we especially enjoyed walking around admiring the many livestock animals and the hard-working farmers, and the dancing bear show was fun and free.

Cheap? Did you read the original statement made about the purpose of county fairs? Let me tell you what is cheap. At one time, many years ago, I sent 4 daughters to the fair with $30.00 each under the supervision of my 16 year old daughter. At 5 PM I drove up the hilltop to where the Little league parking field is. There was a fair guard at the top of the hill whop told me I had to go around to Cemetery Road to pay to park my car so I could pick up my children. I told him to step aside, this road was a public road and they had no business blocking it off and that I was just goping to park there to pick up my children. He said you8 can't park there. I said I am going to park there and he could issue me a ticket if he so chose. George Whitney, who was I guess inn charge of parking told the guard to let me park there seeing as I was only going to pick up my offsprings. Then at the rear gate they wanted me to pay just to go find my children. Now that is what I call cheap. You must be a member of the fair group to defend such tactics.

FYI, the Ilion Elks Lodge BPOE #1444 has a donkey show on the first Friday of every month.

we usually a selection of three or four skanks and two donkeys.

the Elks donkey show is open to the public beginning at 8 pm. admission is $10.

it is a good idea to buy tickets in advance and arrive early as all our donkey shows are standing room only and some have sold out.

You are correct about one thing that I myself am of greater importance. Being lonely because I refuse to go to that scumfest is actually pretty funny considering the croud that gathers there. Funny thing is is that I could easily afford to go and spend a fortune but id much rather spend my money elsewhere, such as a real fun family vacation in the Adirondacks, another state, or Disney for example. Anywhere is better than watching tons of filth that overall cannot afford to go there. I'd be curious to see the results if they checked benefit cards at the door, to see how high the number of people on welfare to not would be in attendance. I love all the dumb guys that fix up cars to smash into each other and they actually think they're cool and some sort of racing crew LMFOAROTF!!

It looks like there is a lot of people sick on the way this fair has gone down. As for the books, the Elthorps control that. It is a wonder how they can have a nice home and do all the traveling for the fair and on their own for what retirement each get. Some one needs to find a way to get into the books and see where it is all going.Maybe is is all legal but i do wonder. The fair use to start with a firemen parada and draw a hugh crowd. That is all gone. And this year they had fireworks at 1030 on a tuesday nite. Who is going to keep their family up at that time. Some one needs to tke this place over and get it back to what is was all about from the beginning.
