No, you are not the only one who is tired of it. The ones who have big bikes with no mufflers know very well that they are disturbing the peace but could not care less. Fact it the noise is on purpose. The state has a law against it and the city has an ordinance. The law plainly states that a combustion engine must be equipped with a proper muffler. If you do not have a muffler you are breaking the law just like breaking the law when speeding, no drivers license, etc. One good thing you can say for the type of person who blasts down the street is that he will go to heaven. When you are not mature enough to be responsible for yourself you will not be turned away from heaven. This county (and others) seldom enforce this law and it is because the citizens aren't insisting on the police to do so. When this was demanded in Erick the council just ignored it. When it was insisted again and disgussed and recordings made, the city realized they had no idea about anything the police were doing or not doing. Once the police were ordered to fix the problem is was and in only about three days. The word got out that tickets were being written and fines being paid. Because of the attitude and lack of responsibility the police were allowed to resign. Best I know they went to Elk City and are police there now. Each time a new set of police are hired they need told that Erick is enforcing the muffler law. It is bad in Elk City. It is about as bad as I have heard it anywhere in the state. I wrote to your mayor but it was obviously ignored. It is an embarassment to your community and many times daily. You can stop it but you must act on it. The Erick police back then tried to tell us that the law was not understandable. Then they said it requires a sound meter to see if it reaches a certain peak. The law is very easy to understand and the state has no peak sound meter reading limit. They also claim that at CLETE (officer training school) they are told that a peace officer can not have his peace disturbed. We found that to be false also. It is also a good idea that you insist that the police understand that you did not just write the law yourself and if they stop someone that they do not suggest that the offender knows where you live so they can go a few blocks around you so you won't complain any more. Once they know you are complaining about their childish behavior they will demonstrate to you that you should not do that. You will be harassed, not only by them but they will bring friends, race engins, honk horns, throw trash and things you won't know about until much later. It was very bad in Erick and no one thought it would be worth it to fight it. You need someone who refuses to let people like this run over them. It took us over two years to convince the city, the police, the Sheriff and the State Police but we did and now it is pretty nice and quiet. A few bad loosers act up just to show they get the last word in but let the police know and it will quiet down again. |

We have all heard the debates about loud pipes and helmets with the final comment...Seriously. Neither are proven facts, or believed by anyone but the bikers of which I was for many years. The truth of the matter is that you like to raise hell with your pipes and don't want to wear a helmet. Seriously ! |

1 Police can not have their peace disturbed. If you don't like the noise you have to sign a complaint. Call the police department and the will issue a citation that you have signed. Then you have to go to court and let the judge know why your peace was disturbed, whether it be loud pipes or music or anything else. Also it is CLEET not Clete. |

Please forgive me if I am wrong. We did ask a policeman about the CLEET training and he said it was not so and laughed. He did suggest that a person bothered should file a complaint. That is understandable because the police can not be everywhere at the same time. They did and the guy was fined a hundred bucks. By the way, he was a prison guard out of Sayre. In these old towns the homes are about 30 feet off of the street and they didn't worry about horses clomping. Some of my best friends ride big motorcycles and are also embarassed when joined or in the presense of a motorcycle with no mufflers needing attention. Years ago I raced for several motorcycle manufacturers. It was a riot when we would see a hot rodder on his Hog show up at a race and try to put on a "Look at me, I'm Bad" show. It was the lowest of the low when I was in a film with the Hell's Angels. I would rather go to a Redneck Louau and sit around a septic tank with long straws. Did a safety film for the Air Force. All bikers should see that one. To solve the problem it just takes a little concern for your fellow man/woman and grow up. Same goes for loud music. I can't remember ever being in Elk City without hearing both. Good Luck folks. |

loud pipes saves lives, please give us your address and we will schedule a poker run going through your neighborhood with all of our loud pipes, it is a proven fact that other drivers notice bikes with loud pipes than bikes that are quiet. maybe you have never ridden a real motorcycle (harley) lol

How many people who do not like the pipes talk on the cell phone while driving? The really stupid like to text and drive. How about the people who pull up to the stop light and toss their smoke out the window? It is to nasty to leave in the car but they will put it in their mouth. These people get on my nerves alot more then the pipes.
Blaming pipes is like blaming guns. If someone knows they have loud pipes and they take it easy in your neighborhood then it is ok. If they try to be loud and bug people, then they are just a jackass trying to be cool and make up for their lack of manhood."If you know what I mean." I do not feel like beating the hell out of people with pipes like I do the jackass on the cell phone who is to stupid to put it down for a minute and pull out in traffic. |

How many times have I heard the claims that loud pipes save lives ? Many. No thanks on the poker run invitation. Yes I have ridden a Harley, but they are a mechanics nightmare. Of course the sound is invigarating. I suppose that loud stereos are also. Loud PA systems. Loud sirens. Loud mouths. Loud pickups and loud cars. But all of these have their place. Until the city put a stop to it we had Harley riders go back and forth on our street passing 30 feet from our home every 2 minutes for HOURS. Then mixed in with it they got a wild hair and had mini drag races. They would get on their pig squeelin horns for a few minutes. They would crank up then back quickly to make them back fire. They threw beer cans all over the place. I sold a Honda 500 to a buddy and he and his wife took the mufflers off and took a ride in the country. A pick up pulled out from a side road and they are dead now. My Pizza cook rode a Sportster, no helmet, no mufflers. Got creamed at an intersection. He is 35 and his father is now doing EVERYTHING for him. Would be better off dead. His brother rides a Sportster, no mufflers no helmet. You think that changed his mind ? Of course not. Shall I go on ? Well, just one more. A young buck 25 years old, Harley, no mufflers, no helmet, and he knew nothing but fast. Was following a truck with no doors on the back. The truck stopped, he hit him. His head was found in the truck bed up front. The bike and his other parts were strung out in the street. Mature considerate bikers with mufflers and wearing helmets have just as much fun as loud hell raisers, their perspective is just different. When you are in traffic with no mufflers it is for a reason, to make noise and be noticed. If you think that it doesn't piss people off and look to see who the idiot is you are very sadly mistaken. |

I understand exactly what you are saying. There are a lot of things that bother us, some more than others. All the things you spoke of could have been avoided or handled differently but like the pipes jock they did it their way, and you can just learn to live with it, so they say, or it saves lives. lon Do you think it bothers them? Of course not. The thing is we live in a moders society with lots of things going on. Laws are written to keep us at peace with each other and to save lives. People break those laws, and often they are killed and/or cause the death of others. Maybe it is just disturbing the peace. To some that means nothing. To others it is a personal invasion of privacy. Why don't we all go out and buy a dog, chain it up out in the yard, let it bark day and night and not pay any attention to it. Wouldn't that be cool? To me that is something worth putting a knot on someones head. |

Actually they do have mufflers but they tend to take the baffles out of them or replace the standered mufflers with glass packs so they will be louder to impress everyone. They don't realize that it is damaging their hearing and will cause hearing loss when they get older. I guess I will suffer hearing loss too though becuase of all the loud rock and roll I used to listen to. I never modified my bike to make it louder I prefered it that way but I guess to each his own. |

guess that loudness might cause them to become deaf, but for alot of them .... Their hard work in the oil field,that allows them to afford their bikes, will cause them to go deaf just as fast.. hmmm. besides, what about all our respectable doctors, lawyers, and business men that ride their harleys?
|
||||
|
Well if a lot of them work in the Oilfield if you keep your eyes open ya might just find one you can buy cheep considering the oil field is almost dead now.
