If our students need to be exposed to the violence in the world, can't they get it from watching tv at home? Just because the Kite Runner is a good book does not mean it belongs in our school system. What is wrong with trying to make our schools a safe haven from graphic violence? I think Mrs. Stovall makes a good point that if they cannot get into a movie containing this type of violence, why should our school system promote it?

my daughter read this book in high school my thing is that too many people find too many things to bitch about.. if your kid in high school doesnt know about these things that happen in real life by now.. that i say question your parenting.. its called sheltering your kids, which is really dumb because when they enter the real world they are going to be eaten alive and fail...mrs stovall is over reacting.. and needs a wake up call..and if it dont belong in schools because of the violence then lets remove hamlet and romeo and juliet as well as other great pieces of literature..

Mrs. Stovall has every right to be concerned. True, children will indeed learn violence and other "life lessons" from other forms of media, even cartoons, but that doesn't mean they should have to learn it in school as a requirement. Also, sheltering children does NOT mean raising them to be ignorant or stupid. It means keeping an eye on what they are exposed to and to what degree. It also involves communicating openly with them in a controlled environment like home, church, or even school (though in this case it comes into question). I agree that children need to be made aware of what is going on in the world. However, there is no need to saturate them with extramarital sex, graphic violence, substance use, and other immoral issues, especially before they are of the age where it is considered appropriate. If parents are going to let books, movies, magazines, and music raise their children, then they should not be surprised when their kids get involved with drugs, sex, and "gang style" activity in middle and even elementary school.

Sheltering your children from the real world is one of the worst things you can do! It has every right to be in a school, why do we send our children to school??? To EDUCATE them. It's our jobs as parents to help them understand why violence is bad, not pretend like it doesn't exist.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Capricorn

You're feeling edgy as Mars moves into reverse, and it won't be long before people start to get on your nerves. You might get very irritated by someone's funny little habits, yet feel you daren't say anything in case you go overboard. Or you could get very annoyed when someone blurts out something that was supposed to be a secret but which quickly becomes common knowledge.
